Turkey in April: Weather and What to Wear

Plan an April trip to Turkey with realistic temperatures, rain expectations and packing advice for Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Pamukkale and the coast.

Climate data checked: 28 September 2026 By: Going2Turkey Official Turkish climate averages used
Quick answer

April is one of Turkey's best months for sightseeing, but you need layers.

Turkey in April is generally mild in Istanbul, cool in Cappadocia and warmer on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Average daytime highs are around 17°C in Istanbul, 16°C in Cappadocia, 21°C around Izmir/Ephesus and 22°C in Antalya. Rain is still possible, and Cappadocia mornings can feel cold.

For most travellers, the right April packing list is simple: comfortable walking shoes, long trousers, T-shirts or light tops, a jumper or fleece, and a light waterproof jacket. Add a warmer layer for Cappadocia sunrise. Pack sunglasses and sunscreen too, because bright spring sun can appear between showers.

April weather

How warm is Turkey in April?

These are long-term climate averages from Turkey's State Meteorological Service. They are useful for packing, but they are not a forecast for your exact dates.

AreaAverage highAverage lowRain patternHow it feels
Istanbulabout 17°Cabout 9°Caround 8 rainy daysMild, changeable, cool after dark
Cappadocia / Nevsehirabout 16°Cabout 5°Caround 12 rainy daysCool mornings, pleasant afternoons
Izmir / Ephesus regionabout 21°Cabout 12°Caround 9 rainy daysComfortable for ruins and walking
Pamukkale / Denizliabout 21°Cabout 9°Caround 10 rainy daysMild to warm by day
Antalyaabout 22°Cabout 11°Caround 8 rainy daysWarmest main stop, spring not summer

April works especially well for travellers who want to walk a lot. Ephesus, Pamukkale and Istanbul are much easier to explore in spring than during midsummer heat. The trade-off is that you may get rain, wind or a cool day between warmer ones.

Do not use the Antalya forecast to pack for Cappadocia. The two places can feel like different seasons on the same trip. A week that includes Istanbul, Cappadocia and Antalya needs more clothing range than a one-city holiday.

Regional guide

What is April weather like in the places most travellers visit?

Turkey's geography matters more than the national average.

Istanbul in April: mild, green and changeable

Istanbul is usually comfortable for long sightseeing days in April. The official average high is about 17°C and the average low is about 9°C. You can have a sunny afternoon that feels warm in sheltered streets, followed by a cool Bosphorus breeze or a rainy evening. A light waterproof jacket is more useful than a heavy winter coat for most April trips.

April is a good month for Sultanahmet, Galata, Karakoy, Kadikoy and Bosphorus walks because the heat is not yet tiring. Keep one flexible indoor option such as Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern or a museum for a wet period.

Istanbul skyline and Bosphorus during mild spring travel weather
April is a strong month for long Istanbul walking days, but a light waterproof layer is still useful.

Cappadocia in April: cold at sunrise, comfortable later

Cappadocia is much cooler than the coast. Nevsehir's April average high is about 16°C and the average low is about 5°C. Before sunrise, especially on an exposed balloon-view terrace or viewpoint, it can feel colder than the daily average suggests. Wind also makes a big difference.

By late morning or afternoon, hiking in Rose Valley, Red Valley or around Goreme can be very comfortable. Wear layers that you can remove rather than one heavy jacket. Closed walking shoes are better than sandals because trails can be damp or muddy after spring rain.

Cappadocia valleys and hot air balloons during spring travel season
Cappadocia mornings can feel cold in April even when the afternoon becomes mild.

Selcuk and Ephesus in April: one of the easiest months for the ruins

The Izmir region averages about 21°C for daytime highs in April. That is excellent for Ephesus because much of the archaeological site is open and exposed. You still need sun protection, but the afternoon is normally much easier than July or August.

Wear shoes with grip for the polished stone streets, bring water, and carry a packable rain jacket if showers are forecast. A light jumper can be useful in the morning, but you may be comfortable in a T-shirt by midday on a sunny day.

Ephesus ancient city in mild spring sightseeing conditions
April temperatures are very comfortable for exposed archaeological sites such as Ephesus.

Pamukkale in April: pleasant for Hierapolis, variable for barefoot travertines

Denizli's April average high is about 21°C and the average low around 9°C. The weather is usually much easier for exploring Hierapolis than peak summer, but your barefoot time on the travertines can feel cool if the air is windy or cloudy. Bring easy-to-remove shoes and something dry for afterwards.

Antalya in April: warm spring days, but not guaranteed beach weather

Antalya is one of the warmest main stops in April, with average daytime highs around 22°C and lows around 11°C. Sunny afternoons can feel warmer, especially in sheltered areas of Kaleici. It is very good weather for Perge, Aspendos and city sightseeing.

Some travellers will swim on warm days, but April is not the month to choose if guaranteed hot beach weather is the main goal. Treat swimming as a possible bonus rather than the purpose of the trip.

Antalya Mediterranean coast during warm spring weather
Antalya is warmer than Istanbul and Cappadocia in April, but conditions still feel like spring rather than high summer.
Packing list

What should you wear in Turkey in April?

Pack a small layer system so you can adjust through the day and between regions.

Base layer

T-shirts and light long-sleeve tops

Useful for warm afternoons and easy to layer under a jumper. Bring both short and long sleeves if your trip crosses several regions.

Warm layer

Light jumper, fleece or thin puffer

Important for Istanbul evenings and especially Cappadocia sunrise. A thin layer packs more easily than a heavy winter coat.

Rain protection

Light waterproof jacket

April still has spring showers. A small hooded rain shell is easier than carrying an umbrella through archaeological sites and windy viewpoints.

Bottoms

Long trousers or comfortable travel pants

Good for city walking, mosque visits, cool mornings and exposed ruins. One lighter pair is useful for warmer coastal afternoons.

Footwear

Comfortable closed walking shoes

Choose grip for Istanbul hills, Cappadocia trails, Ephesus stone streets and wet surfaces around Pamukkale.

Sun

Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen

Spring does not mean weak sun. Ephesus, Pamukkale and Cappadocia have long exposed periods with little shade.

Small-bag checklist

A practical April packing list for 7 to 10 days

You do not need four seasons of luggage. You need clothes that work together.

  • 3-4 T-shirts or lightweight tops
  • 1-2 long-sleeve tops
  • 1 jumper, fleece or light insulated layer
  • 1 waterproof or water-resistant outer jacket
  • 2-3 pairs of long trousers or travel pants
  • Comfortable walking shoes with grip
  • Warm socks for Cappadocia mornings
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Small umbrella if you prefer one in cities
  • Swimwear if your hotel has a pool, spa or your route includes Antalya/Fethiye
  • A scarf or light shawl if useful for warmth or mosque visits

Laundry is easy to arrange in major tourist areas, so avoid overpacking. The most useful April item is not another outfit; it is the extra layer that makes a cold sunrise or wet afternoon comfortable.

Cappadocia in April

Pack for the sunrise, not only the afternoon forecast.

A Cappadocia balloon pickup can begin while it is still dark. Even when the afternoon reaches the mid-teens, the pre-sunrise period can feel genuinely cold. Wear a fleece or light puffer, long trousers and closed shoes. A beanie or scarf can be useful if you feel the cold easily.

April is a good hiking month, but rain can make unpaved valley paths muddy. If you plan a lot of hiking, shoes with tread are more useful than fashion trainers with smooth soles.

Good weather averages do not guarantee a balloon flight. Commercial balloon operators in Turkey must be authorized by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and Cappadocia has local aviation oversight. Flight operation depends on the conditions and safety decision for that morning.

Aegean & Mediterranean

Is April warm enough for Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye or Antalya?

Yes for sightseeing and outdoor days; maybe for swimming; no for guaranteed summer beach conditions.

Southwest Turkey is mild in April. Mugla province, which covers much of the wider Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye region, has spring days around the high teens to low 20s depending on the exact coastal location. Antalya averages around 22°C for daytime highs.

That is excellent for walking old towns, boat harbours, archaeological sites and coastal viewpoints. A sunny sheltered afternoon can feel warm enough for shorts or a T-shirt. After sunset, you will usually want a light jacket or jumper.

If your main reason for visiting is swimming, sunbathing and a full summer resort atmosphere, late May through September is more reliable. In April, pack swimwear but do not build the whole trip around beach weather.

Dates to know

Does anything in late April affect travel plans?

Two dates can matter depending on your route.

23 April: National Sovereignty and Children's Day

23 April is a national celebration in Turkey. You may see ceremonies, school events and flags in cities and towns. Transport and visitor patterns can differ around public-holiday activity, so check opening hours for any place that matters to your plan.

25 April: ANZAC Day at Gallipoli

If you are travelling through Canakkale or the Gallipoli Peninsula, ANZAC Day is a major exception to the normal April crowd pattern. The 25 April commemorations draw visitors to Gallipoli, and access arrangements are special. For 2026, Australia's Smartraveller advised visitors to plan ahead and noted that there is no public transport to the Gallipoli Peninsula National Park for the service.

If Gallipoli is not part of your route, this will have little effect on an Istanbul-Cappadocia-Ephesus-Antalya trip.

Where to go

Which Turkey route works especially well in April?

April favours culture, archaeology and active sightseeing more than a beach-only holiday.

Best first trip

Istanbul + Cappadocia + Selcuk/Ephesus

A strong April combination because all three places reward walking and the temperatures are generally more comfortable than midsummer.

Add history

Pamukkale

April makes Hierapolis easier to explore on foot. Carry a rain layer and be prepared for cool conditions on the travertines.

Add warmer weather

Antalya

Good for Kaleici, waterfalls and ancient-site day trips. Treat beach time as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Best road-trip caution

Keep weather flexibility

Spring showers can change driving and hiking plans. Leave some room in the schedule instead of booking every hour.

Common mistakes

April packing and planning mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from packing for the warmest part of the day.

  • Bringing only summer clothes. Cappadocia mornings and Istanbul evenings can still be cold enough for a warm layer.
  • Bringing a heavy winter wardrobe for the entire trip. Ephesus, Pamukkale and Antalya can be pleasantly warm by afternoon.
  • Skipping waterproof protection. April showers are normal in several major travel regions.
  • Wearing slippery shoes at ruins and valleys. Wet stone and muddy paths need grip.
  • Expecting guaranteed beach weather. The south coast can be warm, but April is still a spring month.
  • Assuming Cappadocia balloons will fly because the monthly climate looks good. The decision is made for the actual morning and safety conditions.
  • Forgetting late-April events. Gallipoli is much busier around ANZAC Day than a normal April day.
FAQ
