Turkey in May: Weather and Where to Go
Plan a May trip to Turkey with realistic regional temperatures, rain expectations, beach conditions and the best places to visit from Istanbul to Cappadocia and the coast.
May is one of the best all-round months to visit Turkey.
For most first-time travellers, May gives one of the best balances of warm weather, long sightseeing days and manageable heat. Istanbul is usually mild to warm, Cappadocia is comfortable for hiking, Ephesus and Pamukkale are already warm, and the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are entering beach season.
If your trip combines Istanbul, Cappadocia, Selcuk/Ephesus and Antalya or Fethiye, May is especially strong because no single stop is normally at its harshest seasonal extreme. You still need a light rain layer and a warmer layer for Cappadocia mornings, but you can travel much lighter than in early spring.
How warm is Turkey in May?
Turkey does not have one May climate. These long-term averages from the Turkish State Meteorological Service show how much conditions change by region.
| Area | Average high | Average low | Typical May pattern | Best use of the weather |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul | about 22°C | about 13°C | Mild-warm, some rain possible | Long walking days, Bosphorus, neighbourhoods |
| Cappadocia / Nevsehir | about 21°C | about 9°C | Comfortable days, cool mornings, spring showers | Valley hikes, viewpoints, outdoor sightseeing |
| Izmir / Ephesus region | about 26°C | about 16°C | Warm and increasingly sunny | Ephesus, Selcuk and Aegean day trips |
| Pamukkale / Denizli | about 27°C | about 13°C | Warm days, occasional spring rain | Hierapolis before summer heat |
| Bodrum / Marmaris / Fethiye region | mid-20s°C | low-to-mid teens | Warm afternoons, early beach season | Boat days, coast walks, mixed beach/sightseeing |
| Antalya | about 26°C | about 16°C | Warm, sunnier and drier than spring | Beach time plus ancient-site day trips |
May is warmer than April almost everywhere, but it has not yet reached the persistent midsummer heat of July and August. That is why it works so well for travellers who want ruins, city walks, valleys and coast time in one trip.
Cappadocia is the main exception to the idea that May always feels summery. The average daytime high is pleasant, but early mornings can still be cool, and May is one of the wetter spring months in the Nevsehir climate record. Carry a light waterproof layer even when most of your trip is forecast to be sunny.
Where are the best places to visit in Turkey in May?
May suits almost every major stop on the Going2Turkey route, but some places benefit more than others.
What is May like in Turkey's main travel destinations?
The same May trip can feel like late spring in Cappadocia and early summer on the coast.
Istanbul in May: one of the easiest months for a first visit
Istanbul's May average high is about 22°C and the average low around 13°C. Long daylight, green parks and comfortable temperatures make it very good for Sultanahmet, Galata, Karakoy, Kadikoy, Balat and Bosphorus ferries. Rain is still possible, but the long-term average is much drier than winter.
May is warm enough that a heavy coat is unnecessary for most travellers, yet it is usually cool enough for long walking days. A light jacket or cardigan is useful after sunset or on a breezy ferry.

Cappadocia in May: excellent for hiking, but do not ignore rain
Cappadocia averages about 21°C for daytime highs and around 9°C for nighttime lows in May. That is close to ideal for Rose Valley, Red Valley, Pigeon Valley and outdoor viewpoints. The landscape is greener than midsummer, and afternoons are generally comfortable.
The important detail is rainfall. Nevsehir's long-term climate data records roughly 13 rainy days in May and around 57 mm of average monthly precipitation. That does not mean thirteen full washout days, but it does mean spring showers are normal. Good shoes and a packable rain shell are useful.
Hot-air balloons may operate in May, but no month guarantees a flight. Balloon operations depend on the actual morning's conditions and aviation safety decision, not the monthly climate average. If the balloon matters to you, stay at least two or three mornings in Cappadocia rather than building the entire trip around one sunrise.

Selcuk and Ephesus in May: warm enough to feel summery
The Izmir region's May average high is around 26°C. For Ephesus, that means you should start earlier in the day than you might in April. The ancient city's stone streets and exposed areas can feel hot by afternoon even before peak summer arrives.
May is still much easier than July and August for most visitors. Take water, a hat and sunscreen, and wear shoes with grip. Selcuk also works well as a base for the Basilica of St John, Ephesus Museum and nearby villages.

Pamukkale in May: warm days and easier walking than midsummer
Denizli averages roughly 26-27°C for daytime highs in May. That is warm, but still usually more manageable than the stronger heat of June, July and August. It is a good month for combining the travertines with the wider Hierapolis archaeological site.
Start earlier if you want to walk more of Hierapolis, carry sun protection, and remember that you will remove your shoes on designated travertine sections.
Is May good for Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Antalya?
Yes, especially if you want a mixed sightseeing-and-coast trip rather than a guaranteed midsummer beach holiday.
May is when the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts start to feel properly active again. Around Mugla province, which covers major coast destinations such as Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye, official climate averages put May daytime highs in the mid-20s. Antalya averages about 26°C.
That is excellent for marinas, boat trips, old towns, coastal walks and archaeological sites. Sea temperatures can still feel cool to some travellers, especially early in the month, so do not choose May only for guaranteed warm-water swimming. Later May is generally a better beach bet than early May.
Choose Antalya if you want the warmest city-and-coast combination
Antalya is a strong May choice because you can combine Kaleici, beaches, waterfalls and ancient sites such as Perge or Aspendos. Average daytime highs are around 26°C, and May is much drier than the winter months.
Choose Fethiye if you want scenery and activities
Fethiye is especially good for travellers interested in Oludeniz, boat trips, walking, viewpoints and outdoor activities. The air is warm without the strongest summer heat, which makes active days easier.
Choose Bodrum or Marmaris if you want Aegean resort atmosphere before peak summer
Both destinations become livelier in May as seasonal businesses reopen and boat operations increase. You can get warm afternoons and a good holiday atmosphere without the July-August intensity.

What should you wear in Turkey in May?
Pack for warm afternoons, cooler mornings and the possibility of spring rain.
- T-shirts and light tops: useful almost everywhere by afternoon.
- Light trousers or travel pants: practical for city days, ruins and cooler mornings.
- Shorts: useful on the coast and warm afternoons, but not the only thing you should pack.
- Light jumper, fleece or cardigan: especially useful in Cappadocia and on Istanbul ferries after sunset.
- Packable waterproof jacket: May showers remain possible, particularly in Cappadocia and western Turkey.
- Comfortable walking shoes: essential for Ephesus, Istanbul, Pamukkale and Cappadocia trails.
- Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen: the sun is already strong enough for long exposed sightseeing days.
- Swimwear: worth packing for Antalya, Fethiye, Marmaris or Bodrum, even if swimming is not guaranteed every day.
If your route is Istanbul → Cappadocia → Ephesus → Pamukkale → coast, layers are more useful than packing separate wardrobes for each region. A small jacket plus light warm layer covers most of the temperature range.
Which Turkey itinerary works especially well in May?
May is one of the easiest months to combine culture, scenery and coast without major seasonal compromises.
May dates and planning details
A few calendar details can affect local transport and busy areas.
1 May is Labour and Solidarity Day in Turkey. In major cities, especially Istanbul, there can be demonstrations, police restrictions or transport changes around gathering areas. Follow local advice and avoid large demonstrations.
19 May is Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, a national public holiday. Ceremonies and events may make some central areas busier than a normal weekday.
May is also popular with international visitors because it sits between cool spring and hot summer. Book well-located Istanbul and Cappadocia hotels earlier if your dates are fixed, especially around weekends and public holidays.
May travel mistakes to avoid
May is easy to travel, but a few assumptions can still create problems.
- Packing only summer clothes. Cappadocia sunrise and Istanbul evenings can still feel cool.
- Assuming May is dry everywhere. Cappadocia still has a meaningful spring-rain pattern.
- Planning Ephesus for the hottest part of the afternoon. Start earlier once May temperatures rise.
- Expecting guaranteed warm sea temperatures. The air can be beach-friendly before the sea feels warm to everyone.
- Booking only one Cappadocia morning for a balloon. Weather and aviation safety decisions can cancel flights in any month.
- Ignoring public-holiday dates. 1 May and 19 May can affect traffic, events and local movement.
