Best Time to Visit Turkey for Good Weather

Compare spring, summer and autumn weather across Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Pamukkale and Turkey's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.

Climate data checked: 28 September 2026 By: Going2Turkey Official long-term climate averages used
Quick answer

For most first-time visitors, May and September offer the best balance of good weather across Turkey.

If your trip combines Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus or Pamukkale and the coast, the strongest all-round periods are usually late April to May and September to early October. Days are generally warm enough for sightseeing, but less intense than the peak heat of July and August.

There is no single perfect weather month for all of Turkey. Cappadocia sits high in central Anatolia and can have cold mornings even when Antalya feels almost summery. Istanbul is milder and more changeable, while Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Antalya stay warm much later into autumn.

If Cappadocia is a must-do stop, use the best time to visit Turkey and Cappadocia guide for a more focused month-by-month comparison.

The table explains why May and September work so well for multi-stop trips. Istanbul and Cappadocia are comfortable for long walking days, while western and southern Turkey are already warm. In September, the Mediterranean remains much warmer than central Turkey, so a trip can combine sightseeing with beach time.

Rain patterns also differ. Istanbul has rain in every season. Cappadocia is relatively dry in midsummer but spring can bring showers. Antalya has very dry summers and a much wetter winter season. For travellers crossing several regions, layers are more useful than trying to pack for one national forecast.

Month by month

Which months have the best weather for a Turkey trip?

The right month depends on whether your priority is walking, archaeology, balloons, beaches or avoiding very hot afternoons.

March: improving weather, but still unpredictable

March can work for Istanbul and archaeological sightseeing if you accept changeable conditions. Cappadocia can still feel wintry, especially around sunrise and after dark, and snow is possible. The coast is milder, but it is not the month I would choose mainly for swimming.

April: excellent for active sightseeing

April is one of the best months for travellers who prefer cooler walking weather. Istanbul's average daytime high is around 17°C, Cappadocia around 16°C and western Turkey around the low 20s. You should still expect some rain and cool evenings. It is especially good for Ephesus, Pamukkale and long city days because exposed archaeological sites are much easier than in midsummer heat.

May: one of the best all-round months

May is my strongest all-purpose recommendation for a first Turkey trip. Istanbul is comfortably warm, Cappadocia days are pleasant, Ephesus and Pamukkale are warm without the usual July-August intensity, and the Mediterranean coast is moving into beach season. Nights in Cappadocia can still be cool enough for a jacket.

June: reliable warmth, especially for the coast

June is excellent if swimming and boat trips matter. The coast is hot and generally dry, while Istanbul remains manageable. Cappadocia is warmer and sunny, though midday hiking becomes less comfortable. Visitor numbers also rise, so early starts become more important at Ephesus, Pamukkale and major Istanbul sights.

July and August: best for guaranteed heat, not for comfortable sightseeing

These are the hottest months in much of the country. Antalya's average daytime highs are around the mid-30s, while Izmir, Denizli and southwest Turkey can also be very hot. Istanbul is warmer and humid, and exposed ruins can be tiring in the afternoon. July and August make sense for beach-first holidays, but they are not my first choice for a route built around Ephesus, Pamukkale and city walking.

September: the best warm-weather compromise

September is another outstanding month. Istanbul averages around 26°C by day, Cappadocia around 25°C, and the Aegean and Mediterranean are still hot. This is especially useful if you want to combine Istanbul and Cappadocia with Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye or Antalya and still expect good beach conditions.

October: very good for sightseeing, especially in the south

Early October can be excellent. Istanbul is milder, Cappadocia becomes cool in the mornings and evenings, while Antalya still averages around 27°C for daytime highs. Ephesus and Pamukkale are far more comfortable than in peak summer. Later in October, rain risk rises and evenings become noticeably cooler.

November to February: quieter, cheaper in some places, but not the easiest weather

Winter can be rewarding if you want fewer crowds and do not mind cold or rain. Istanbul can be damp and chilly. Cappadocia may have snow and freezing nights. Antalya is much milder but also receives much more winter rainfall than in summer. Winter is a different style of Turkey trip rather than a substitute for spring or autumn weather.

Plan by destination

Best weather by Turkey destination

The ideal season changes depending on where most of your trip will be spent.

Istanbul: April to June and September to October

Istanbul is a walking city, so moderate temperatures matter. April and May are comfortable for Sultanahmet, Galata, Karakoy and Bosphorus days. September is warm and still good for ferries and outdoor dining. October is cooler but often pleasant. July and August can be hot and humid, while winter brings more rain and short daylight hours.

Spring and autumn suit Istanbul because many of the city's best days involve long periods outside and on foot.

Cappadocia: May, June, September and early October

Cappadocia benefits from dry, clear weather, but its altitude means mornings can be much colder than the coast. May and September are particularly strong for valley walks, viewpoints and outdoor tours. April and October are also good if you pack warmer layers. In July and August, afternoons can be hot, although mornings are usually much more comfortable.

Cappadocia valleys and balloons under clear weather conditions
Cappadocia often has its best hiking weather in spring and autumn, but balloon operation is decided separately for safety.

Selcuk and Ephesus: April, May, September and October

Ephesus is exposed, with limited shade over large parts of the archaeological site. Spring and autumn are much easier for a two-to-three-hour visit than July or August. May is warm, while September still feels summery. If you visit in peak summer, enter as early as possible and carry water and sun protection.

Pamukkale: April to May and late September to October

Pamukkale and Hierapolis also involve a lot of exposed walking. April and May are good for exploring the ruins and travertines without the strongest heat. September can still be hot, but it becomes more manageable later in the month. October is one of the nicest sightseeing periods.

Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye: June to September for beaches; May and October for exploring

If your main goal is swimming, boat trips and beach days, summer into September is the safest period for warm conditions. For hiking, driving and archaeological day trips, May and October are more comfortable. September is the best compromise if you want both sightseeing and warm sea conditions.

Antalya: April to June and September to October

Antalya has a longer warm season than Istanbul or Cappadocia. May is already warm, June is hot and dry, and September remains around the low 30s for average daytime highs. October is especially useful for travellers who want a warm coast after cooler days in Istanbul or Cappadocia.

Antalya's longer warm season makes it one of the easiest places to add beach time to a spring or autumn Turkey itinerary.
Cappadocia balloon planning

Good seasonal weather does not guarantee a hot-air-balloon flight.

Cappadocia balloons depend on the conditions for that specific morning and on official aviation authorization. Even during May or September, flights can be cancelled when wind or other conditions are unsuitable. Turkey's Directorate General of Civil Aviation regulates commercial balloon operations and maintains a local Cappadocia presence for safe operations.

If a balloon flight matters to you, stay at least two or three mornings in Cappadocia and book the flight for your first available morning. That gives you another chance if your original flight is cancelled.

Pack for several climates

What should you wear in Turkey in spring and autumn?

A multi-stop itinerary needs layers because mornings, afternoons and coast days can feel completely different.

  • Light layers: T-shirts plus a light jumper or fleece make it easy to adjust between warm afternoons and cool mornings.
  • A light rain jacket: useful in Istanbul and during spring travel even when the overall forecast looks good.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: important for Istanbul hills, Cappadocia valleys, Ephesus stone streets and Pamukkale/Hierapolis.
  • Sun protection: sunglasses, hat and sunscreen are useful from spring through autumn, especially at exposed archaeological sites.
  • A warmer layer for Cappadocia sunrise: balloon check-in and viewpoints can feel cold before sunrise even after warm daytime weather.
  • Swimwear: worth packing for late spring through autumn if Antalya, Fethiye, Marmaris or Bodrum are on your route.

Do not pack only for the warmest destination. A September trip can include a hot afternoon in Antalya and a much cooler sunrise in Cappadocia within the same week.

Choose your month

Which season suits your Turkey trip?

Use your main activity to choose the month instead of searching for one perfect national season.

Best overall

May

Excellent for Istanbul, Cappadocia, archaeology and active sightseeing, with increasingly good coastal weather.

Warm + beach friendly

September

Excellent for combining Istanbul and Cappadocia with warm Aegean or Mediterranean beach days.

Cooler sightseeing

April or October

Best if you prefer walking and archaeology to swimming and do not mind some rain or cooler evenings.

Beach-first holiday

June to August

Best for maximum heat and reliable coastal weather, but less comfortable for exposed ruins and long city walks.

Common mistakes

Weather-planning mistakes to avoid in Turkey

Most problems come from assuming every part of the country has the same season.

  • Using Antalya weather for the whole country. Cappadocia can be much colder at the same time of year.
  • Choosing July or August for an archaeology-heavy itinerary without planning early starts. Ephesus and Pamukkale have large exposed areas.
  • Expecting beach weather in April everywhere. Southern Turkey can be warm, but sea and air conditions vary and northern/western areas may still feel spring-like.
  • Assuming September means cool autumn weather. Antalya, Pamukkale and the Aegean can still be hot.
  • Forgetting Cappadocia sunrise temperatures. Pack a warm layer even when daytime forecasts look comfortable.
  • Booking only one morning for a balloon. Weather and official safety decisions can cancel flights in any season.
  • Trusting climate averages as a forecast. Check the actual forecast shortly before travel; averages only show what is typical.
