Turkey in December: Weather and Where to Go

Plan a December trip to Turkey with realistic temperatures, rain and snow expectations, Cappadocia advice, Christmas and New Year timing, quieter sightseeing and the best places to visit.

Climate data reviewed: 30 September 2026 By: Going2Turkey Official Turkish climate statistics used
Quick answer

Is December a good time to visit Turkey?

Yes, if you want culture, winter atmosphere, lower crowds and a slower sightseeing trip rather than a beach holiday. December is colder and wetter than November in much of western Turkey, while Cappadocia can have freezing mornings, frost, snow or icy conditions. Istanbul remains excellent because museums, mosques, markets, food and neighbourhoods work year-round. Antalya is milder, but December is one of its wettest months.

The main advantage is that major cultural sights are easier to enjoy without summer heat. The trade-off is shorter daylight and more weather disruption. A December plan should leave room for rain in Istanbul and the Aegean, snow or ice in Cappadocia, and occasional transport changes during bad weather.

Best December strategy: build the trip around Istanbul and Cappadocia, add Ephesus or Pamukkale for archaeology, and use Antalya as a mild-weather city base rather than expecting a summer-style resort holiday.
Weather by region

What is the weather like in Turkey in December?

December is winter, but the difference between Cappadocia and the Mediterranean coast is large.

AreaAverage December highAverage December lowWhat it means for travellers
IstanbulAbout 11.8°CAbout 6.5°CCool city weather with frequent rain; plan indoor alternatives.
Cappadocia / NevsehirAbout 6.2°CAbout -1.3°CFreezing mornings are normal planning conditions; snow and ice are possible.
Izmir / AegeanAbout 14.0°CAbout 7.7°CGood for archaeology between rain systems; not beach weather.
AntalyaAbout 16.7°CAbout 7.7°CMilder than inland Turkey, but December is very wet by local standards.

Figures use official Turkish State Meteorological Service long-period climate statistics and are planning averages, not a forecast. Istanbul averages about 15.5 rainy days in December, Izmir about 13.3, Nevsehir about 12.3 and Antalya about 11.9.

Where to go

Best places to visit in Turkey in December

December works best in destinations with strong cultural sights and flexible indoor options.

City break

Istanbul

Excellent for historic sights, museums, bazaars, neighbourhood food and Bosphorus views. Keep one indoor backup for every outdoor block.

Winter scenery

Cappadocia

Cave hotels, valleys and snow can be beautiful. Give balloons several mornings and pack for freezing sunrise temperatures.

Archaeology

Ephesus + Pamukkale

Cooler conditions make long walks easier, but rain gear and flexible timing matter more than in autumn.

Mildest major stop

Antalya

Use Antalya for Kaleici, museums, waterfalls and ancient-site day trips. Expect rain and treat beach time as a bonus.

Istanbul

What is Istanbul like in December?

December suits travellers who enjoy atmosphere, food and historic interiors more than long sunny walking days.

Istanbul's long-term December average is about 9.0°C, with an average high near 11.8°C and low around 6.5°C. Rain is common, daylight is short and wind around the Bosphorus can make the temperature feel colder. Snow is possible in winter but should never be treated as guaranteed for a December visit.

The city still works extremely well because the reasons to visit are not seasonal. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar all fit winter planning. Neighbourhoods such as Karakoy, Galata, Kadikoy and Besiktas are also good for building days around cafes, restaurants and shorter walks.

Istanbul and the Bosphorus during December winter weather
December in Istanbul is more about atmosphere, history and food than long outdoor days.

Use our 3 day Istanbul itinerary as the base, but reduce the number of outdoor stops per day. Start the highest-priority outdoor sight when the forecast looks driest, then move to museums, markets or a long lunch when rain arrives.

Bosphorus ferries still run and can be one of the best parts of a winter visit. Sit inside when the wind is strong and move outside briefly for views. A ferry crossing to Kadikoy can combine transport, scenery and a food stop without committing to hours outdoors.

Cappadocia

Is Cappadocia worth visiting in December?

Yes, especially for winter atmosphere, but you must plan for cold mornings and weather-dependent balloons.

Official Nevsehir climate data gives a December average high around 6.2°C and an average low around -1.3°C. The historical record includes far colder conditions, so a normal travel plan needs warm layers, gloves, a hat and shoes with grip. At balloon pickup time, before sunrise, it can feel much colder than the daytime number shown in an app.

Snow is possible and can completely change the landscape. Fairy chimneys, cave hotels and valleys under snow are memorable, but a snowy photo is never guaranteed. Some December stays are cold and dry; others see snow, wind or icy paths. Treat the weather you get as part of the experience rather than booking only for a specific winter image.

Cappadocia fairy chimneys and balloons during December winter weather
December can make Cappadocia dramatic and quiet, but cold and flight cancellations require flexibility.

Hot-air balloons can fly in December when conditions are safe. Winter does not automatically stop flights, but wind, precipitation, visibility and other operational conditions are assessed for the actual morning. If a balloon flight matters, stay at least three nights and keep more than one sunrise available.

On the ground, underground cities and museums make strong cold-weather options. Valley walks can be excellent on clear dry afternoons, but ice, snow or mud should change your plan. Do not force a trail simply because it was on the itinerary.

Aegean + ancient sites

Are Ephesus and Pamukkale good in December?

Yes for travellers who prefer cool archaeological sightseeing and can work around rain.

Izmir's official December average high is about 14.0°C and low around 7.7°C. That is much easier for walking through Ephesus than July or August, when heat changes how long many visitors can comfortably stay on the exposed ancient streets.

The challenge is rain. Izmir averages about 13.3 rainy days in December, so waterproof footwear and a flexible day order matter. If the morning looks dry, use it for Ephesus and keep Selcuk museums, restaurants or indoor stops for the wetter part of the day.

Ephesus ancient city for a cool December sightseeing day
December removes the summer heat from Ephesus, but rain can make the marble surfaces slippery.

Pamukkale is also possible year-round. The travertines, Hierapolis and the archaeological setting remain the main reasons to go. December should be treated as a sightseeing visit, not a warm-weather pool day. Bring warm layers for exposed areas and check the actual forecast before choosing your longest outdoor block.

Mediterranean coast

Is Antalya warm in December?

Antalya is milder than Cappadocia and Istanbul, but December is not reliable beach weather.

Antalya's long-term December average high is about 16.7°C and low around 7.7°C. Sunny afternoons can feel pleasant, especially in sheltered areas, but December is one of Antalya's wettest months. Official long-period data shows roughly 11.9 rainy days and around 250.9 mm of average monthly precipitation.

That combination makes Antalya useful as a winter city and history base rather than a resort-only stop. Kaleici, Antalya Archaeology Museum, Perge, Aspendos and Side can all fit a winter itinerary when conditions cooperate. Waterfalls may look impressive after rain, while exposed ancient sites are best saved for the clearest part of the forecast.

Antalya coast and old town for a mild December visit
Antalya is one of the mildest major December bases in Turkey, but rain is a serious planning factor.

Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye can also be peaceful in December, but they are much quieter than summer. Some seasonal boat trips, beach businesses and resort services reduce hours or stop. Choose them for scenery, local life and a slow stay, not because you expect the full July experience.

Timing

Early December vs late December

The month becomes busier around New Year even though the weather trend remains winter.

Early December: usually gives the quietest travel rhythm. Tourist areas can feel calm, popular archaeological sites have space, and city hotels may have more choice outside special events. Weather can still be wet or cold, but there is less holiday-period demand.

Mid December: works well for a culture-focused route. Istanbul becomes more festive in commercial areas, Cappadocia feels fully wintry, and coastal resorts are firmly in low season. This is a good period if you want winter atmosphere without the New Year crowds.

Late December: expect stronger demand in Istanbul, Cappadocia and popular celebration hotels around New Year's Eve. Restaurants and entertainment venues may require reservations. Transport can also be busier around holiday dates, so do not leave important domestic flights or high-priority hotels until the last minute.

If your dates are flexible: choose early or mid December for the quietest trip. Choose late December if New Year atmosphere is part of the reason you are travelling.
Holiday timing

What are Christmas and New Year like in Turkey?

December 25 and New Year's Eve create very different travel patterns.

Turkey does not have the same Christmas shutdown pattern that travellers may expect in parts of Europe. Hotels, restaurants, transport and major visitor areas generally continue operating around December 25, although individual businesses can always set their own hours.

New Year's Eve is much more important for visitor planning. Istanbul hotels, rooftop restaurants, Bosphorus dinner cruises and entertainment venues can become busy, while Cappadocia hotels may sell special dinners or packages. If December 31 matters to you, reserve the experience you actually care about rather than assuming you can decide on the evening.

January 1 can bring reduced hours or a slower start at some businesses. Recheck attraction opening times, transport and restaurant plans for the exact year of travel. A good late-December itinerary should not depend on one attraction being open at one precise hour without verification.

Itinerary ideas

Which Turkey route works best in December?

Keep the route compact enough to absorb a wet day, snow disruption or a cancelled balloon flight.

7 days

Istanbul + Cappadocia

The strongest short December combination. Give Cappadocia several mornings if balloons are important.

10 days

Istanbul + Cappadocia + Ephesus

Strong for culture and archaeology without depending on beach weather.

12-14 days

Istanbul + Cappadocia + Ephesus + Pamukkale + Antalya

A balanced winter route ending in Turkey's mildest major coastal city.

Slow winter trip

Istanbul + Cappadocia + Antalya

Three longer bases give you more flexibility to move activities around weather changes.

Packing

What should you wear in Turkey in December?

Pack for wet cities, freezing Cappadocia mornings and milder but rainy Antalya afternoons.

Bring a waterproof or water-resistant outer jacket, warm mid-layer, long trousers, closed walking shoes with grip and a compact umbrella. For Cappadocia, add thermal layers, gloves, a warm hat, thicker socks and footwear that can handle mud, frost or light snow.

For Istanbul, waterproof footwear is often more useful than extremely heavy clothing. You will move between heated interiors and damp streets. A scarf or light neck warmer is useful around the Bosphorus. In Antalya, layers are more practical because a sunny afternoon can feel much milder than a rainy evening.

Do not pack only to the average temperature. December travel feels different after dark, at altitude and in strong wind. One flexible layering system is better than separate outfits for every region.

Costs and crowds

Is December cheap and quiet in Turkey?

Often yes early in the month, but New Year can reverse the pattern in popular places.

Early December is low season across much of the Going2Turkey route. That can mean calmer attractions and softer accommodation demand compared with summer. Istanbul remains a major year-round city, while Cappadocia still attracts travellers for balloons, cave hotels and winter scenery.

Late December is different. New Year demand can raise hotel and restaurant prices in Istanbul and Cappadocia, especially for properties with views, rooftop events or special dinners. Compare exact dates rather than assuming the entire month has one price level.

Low season also changes supply. Some coastal businesses close temporarily or reduce schedules. A cheap resort room is only good value if the restaurants, transport and activities you want are operating. For December, value is strongest for travellers prioritising city life, history, food, scenery and a quieter pace.

Common mistakes

December travel mistakes to avoid

Most December problems come from treating winter averages as guarantees or planning the same pace as summer.

  • Expecting a beach holiday in Antalya. Mild does not mean dry, hot or guaranteed swimming weather.
  • Booking only one Cappadocia balloon morning. Winter weather can cancel flights; allow several mornings.
  • Packing one jacket for every region. Cappadocia before sunrise can feel completely different from Antalya at midday.
  • Ignoring short daylight. Protect your most important outdoor sights for the middle of the day.
  • Wearing smooth-soled shoes. Rain, wet stone, mud and ice make grip more important.
  • Assuming low season means everything is open. Check current coast services, boat trips and attraction hours.
  • Leaving New Year's Eve bookings too late. Popular Istanbul and Cappadocia venues can fill even during winter.
  • Using climate averages as a forecast. Check current forecasts shortly before each destination.
