Quick answer

Do tourists need a visa for Turkey in 2026?

It depends on the passport you travel with. Many visitors, including ordinary passport holders from Australia, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, can currently visit Turkey for tourism without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Other nationalities need an e-Visa or a visa issued through a Turkish embassy or consulate.

The safest way to check is by passport nationality, passport type and purpose of travel. Do not assume that a friend with a different passport has the same rules. The official Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa page and the government e-Visa website are the final sources to use before travel.

Important: this page is for short tourist visits with ordinary passports. Work, study, long stays, residence, official passports and some special travel documents can follow different rules.

Why rules differ

Your passport decides more than your departure country.

Visa rules are based mainly on nationality, travel-document type and the reason for your trip.

If you live in Australia but travel on an Indian passport, you should check the Indian-passport rule, not the Australian rule. If you hold dual nationality, check the passport you will actually present to the airline and at Turkish border control. The same passport details must be used consistently where a visa or e-Visa is required.

Ordinary passports and official passports can also have different rules. For example, some countries have visa-free access for ordinary tourist passports while official passport holders still require a visa. Special British nationality categories can also differ from standard British citizen passports.

Your purpose of travel matters too. A tourist holiday is not the same legal category as employment, university study, journalism, long-term residence or some business activities. The Turkish e-Visa system states that e-Visas are for tourism or trade purposes. Travellers going for work or study should use the Turkish embassy or consular process appropriate to their purpose.

Electronic visa

How the Turkey e-Visa works

An e-Visa is an official electronic document that allows eligible travellers to enter Turkey. You apply online, enter passport and travel details, meet any nationality-specific conditions, pay the stated fee and download the approved document.

Not everyone needs an e-Visa, and not everyone is eligible for one. If your passport is already visa-exempt, you normally do not need to buy an e-Visa for the same short tourist visit. If your nationality requires a visa, the official checker will tell you whether the electronic route is available and what conditions apply.

Use the government website: evisa.gov.tr. The Turkish government warns that third-party websites may charge extra service fees and are not endorsed by the government.

e-Visa details

What you should know before applying

Small application errors can create unnecessary airport problems.

  • Each traveller needs their own document: if an e-Visa is required, children and infants also need their own e-Visa.
  • Match the passport exactly: name, passport number, nationality and document details should match the passport you will travel with.
  • Eligibility can be conditional: some nationalities need a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the United States, the United Kingdom or Ireland, plus other conditions displayed by the official system.
  • Fees vary: the official system calculates the fee after you choose your nationality and travel document. Do not rely on an old blog price.
  • Validity and permitted stay are not the same thing: an e-Visa can have a validity window that is longer than the number of days you may actually stay.
  • Keep a copy: border systems can normally verify the e-Visa electronically, but the government advises carrying a digital or printed copy in case of a system problem.

Do not buy an e-Visa simply because a search result or travel forum says you need one. Start with the official eligibility checker. Visa arrangements have changed for several nationalities in recent years, so older advice can be wrong even when it was correct at the time it was written.

Passport validity

How long must your passport be valid for Turkey?

There are two useful rules to understand: the legal minimum and the safer travel-planning recommendation.

The official e-Visa guidance states that travellers must hold a passport or accepted travel document with an expiry date at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay permitted by their visa, e-Visa, visa exemption or residence permit. Your nationality can have additional conditions.

Separately, Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises travellers to have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival. For a normal holiday, following the six-month recommendation is the simpler and safer approach because it reduces the risk of an airline check-in problem or a last-minute interpretation issue.

Practical rule: if your passport is close to expiry, renew it before the trip rather than trying to calculate the exact legal minimum around a 90-day allowance.

Also check that the passport has no serious damage and that the personal details are correct. If you renew your passport after receiving an e-Visa, check the official instructions carefully because an e-Visa is linked to the travel-document information entered during the application.

Length of stay

What does “90 days in any 180 days” mean?

This limit is common for visa-exempt visitors, but it is a rolling period rather than a fresh 90 days every time you cross the border.

For nationalities that receive the 90-in-180-day rule, you can spend a maximum of 90 days in Turkey across any rolling 180-day period. Leaving for a few days does not automatically reset the allowance. Previous days in Turkey can still count when you return.

For an ordinary two-week or three-week holiday this is rarely complicated. It matters much more to frequent visitors, people combining several long stays, property owners who visit repeatedly, or travellers planning to spend close to three months in the country.

Do not overstay. If you want to remain longer than your permitted tourist stay, research the appropriate residence or long-stay process rather than assuming a border run will reset your days. Entry and residence rules are separate from ordinary tourism planning.

Application steps

How to check and apply for a Turkey visa

Start with the official system before paying any third party.

Step 1

Check your passport rule

Open the official MFA country list or e-Visa eligibility checker and select the nationality and travel document you will actually use.

Step 2

Confirm your travel purpose

Tourism and trade may qualify for an e-Visa. Work, study and other purposes can require a different consular visa.

Step 3

Complete the official application

If eligible, enter passport and travel details exactly, meet any supporting conditions and pay the fee shown by the government system.

Step 4

Save the approval

Download the e-Visa and keep an offline copy. Recheck the passport number, name and dates before you travel.

Visa-free does not mean document-free

What should visa-exempt tourists still carry?

A visa exemption removes the visa requirement; it does not remove normal border checks.

Travel with the passport that qualifies for your exemption and make sure it meets the validity requirements. Airlines can also ask for proof that you meet your destination's entry rules before boarding. Depending on your trip and circumstances, you may be asked about onward travel, accommodation, return plans or sufficient funds.

Keep your first hotel address, return or onward flight details and basic itinerary easy to access. Most ordinary tourists will never need to produce a folder of paperwork, but having the information on your phone is useful if an airline or border officer asks a routine question.

If your route continues to another country after Turkey, check that country's entry rules separately. A Turkish visa or visa exemption does not give automatic entry rights to Greece, the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom or any other onward destination.

Before you book

Check entry rules early, then build the trip.

Visa questions should be solved before non-refundable bookings, especially if your passport needs an embassy visa or a conditional e-Visa. Once entry is clear, you can plan the route normally.

For a first visit, a practical sequence is Istanbul → Cappadocia → Ephesus/Pamukkale → the Aegean or Mediterranean coast. Use our first-time Turkey planning guide for trip length, transport, hotels and booking order.

Pre-flight check

Turkey entry checklist for tourists

Use this short list before you leave for the airport.

  • Passport: correct passport, undamaged and comfortably within the validity guidance.
  • Visa status: confirmed from the official MFA or e-Visa website for your exact nationality and passport type.
  • e-Visa if required: approved, details checked and a copy saved offline.
  • Stay length: within the permitted number of days, including earlier visits if the 90/180 rule applies.
  • Purpose: your visa or exemption matches tourism rather than work, study or residence.
  • First accommodation: address and booking confirmation easy to access.
  • Onward plan: return or onward travel details available if requested.
  • Next country: separate entry requirements checked if Turkey is only one stop on a longer trip.

When your entry documents are settled, continue with the best Turkey itinerary for first-time visitors or compare how many days you need in Turkey.

Common mistakes

Turkey visa mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from using the wrong source or assuming one passport rule applies to everyone.

  • Paying a third-party visa website before checking the government site. The official e-Visa portal is evisa.gov.tr.
  • Assuming all tourists need an e-Visa. Many major tourism markets are currently visa-exempt.
  • Assuming visa-free means unlimited stay. Many exemptions are limited to 90 days in any 180 days.
  • Using residence country instead of passport nationality. Your travel document is the key starting point.
  • Confusing e-Visa validity with permitted stay. They are not necessarily the same period.
  • Ignoring passport validity. A valid-looking passport can still be too close to expiry for the trip.
  • Using an old blog or social-media post. Turkey changed rules for several nationalities recently, including new 2026 exemptions.
  • Using a tourist e-Visa for work or study. Those purposes require the appropriate consular route.
