Turkey SIM Card & eSIM for Tourists 2026
Compare local tourist SIM cards, Turkish eSIMs, international travel eSIMs and home roaming, with the 2026 access restrictions and 120-day IMEI rule explained simply.
What is the easiest way to get mobile data in Turkey?
For most short trips, you have four realistic choices: use your home carrier's roaming, install an international travel eSIM before you arrive, buy a Turkish tourist eSIM, or buy a physical tourist SIM from Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey or Turk Telekom.
If your phone supports eSIM and you want to keep your normal number active for messages, an eSIM is usually the cleanest setup. If you want a Turkish phone number, local calls and straightforward in-country support, a Turkish operator tourist SIM or eSIM is often easier to manage after arrival.
Your four mobile-data options in Turkey
The best choice depends on trip length, phone compatibility, whether you need a Turkish number and how much setup you want to do before arrival.
| Option | Best for | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming | Very short trips or travellers who want zero setup | Your normal number works immediately | Can be expensive; check daily roaming fees before travel |
| International travel eSIM | Data-first travellers with an unlocked eSIM phone | Can be installed before departure | Many foreign eSIM storefronts are blocked inside Turkey, so top-ups or account access can be difficult |
| Turkish tourist eSIM | Travellers who want a local line without changing a physical SIM | Local number, calls and data; keeps physical SIM slot free | Requires a compatible unlocked phone and operator identity checks |
| Physical Turkish tourist SIM | Older phones, longer trips or travellers who want store support | Simple local line with physical card | Requires a store visit and replaces one physical SIM slot |
Do not compare only the advertised data allowance. Check the total price for the new line, SIM/eSIM activation and package, because operator offers and retailer charges can change. Also check whether the package includes local calls, SMS, hotspot use and how long the allowance remains valid.
Is eSIM banned in Turkey?
No. eSIM technology itself is not banned. Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey currently advertise eSIM options for tourist lines, which makes the distinction important.
What changed in 2025 was access to many foreign travel-eSIM sellers. Access-blocking decisions associated with Turkey's telecom regulator, BTK, affected the domains of dozens of providers. Reported decisions included well-known brands such as Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Mobimatter, aloSIM, Roamless, Maya, Yesim, Ubigi, GigSky, Jetpac and others.
The practical problem is not simply whether an eSIM profile can connect to a Turkish network. The problem is that, once you are inside Turkey, the provider's website or app may not load on a Turkish connection. That can make buying a plan, finishing installation, viewing an account or topping up difficult.

Why are foreign eSIM websites restricted?
The restriction is about unauthorised electronic communications services, not about turning off the eSIM feature in your phone.
Access-monitoring reports cite BTK Authorisation Department decisions from July and September 2025 that blocked the domains of multiple international eSIM sellers. In a response to an information request, BTK reportedly described the measures as preventing unauthorised electronic communications services under Turkey's Electronic Communications Law.
For travellers, the legal argument matters less than the practical result: a foreign eSIM seller that worked perfectly on your home Wi-Fi may have a website or app that is inaccessible after you connect through a Turkish network. The affected list has expanded over time, so an old blog post or social-media list can quickly become incomplete.
This is why this guide does not name a single international eSIM as the universal best choice. If you prefer one, check that provider's current Turkey status directly before purchasing and install it before departure.
Turkish tourist SIM cards and eSIMs
Turkey's three main mobile operators all have prepaid options. Tourist packages, line fees and promotions change, so use the operator's own current page before paying.
These are not ranked because the right choice changes with your destination, device, package needs, shop stock and the offers available on your exact travel date. Compare the final amount you pay, not only the package headline.
How much does a tourist SIM cost in Turkey?
Prices change frequently, and a package price is not always the same as the final new-line price.
As of the 30 September 2026 review, Turk Telekom's official tourist page displayed examples including 10 GB for 7 days, 25 GB for 28 days, 50 GB for 28 days and 75 GB for 15 days, with listed package prices ranging from 320 TL to 550 TL. Vodafone's English tourist page states that its new SIM-card fee can vary from shop to shop, which is a useful reminder not to assume every airport or city retailer will quote the same total.
Turkcell also publishes tourist packages and app-based eSIM activation, but promotions can change rapidly. Rather than locking your trip to an old screenshot price, open the operator's official tourist page shortly before arrival and compare the total cost for your expected stay.
Airport shop or city-centre store?
Buying at the airport is the easiest option when you need maps, messages and transport apps immediately. Official operator pages confirm airport or nearby operator-shop availability for tourist lines, but convenience does not guarantee the lowest final price.
If you already have working roaming or a pre-installed eSIM for your first day, you can wait and visit an official operator store in the city. This gives you more time to compare packages and ask for the total price before activation.
At Istanbul Airport, do not let a SIM purchase delay a pre-booked transfer or transport connection. If you need help reaching Sultanahmet first, use our Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet guide.
Do tourists need to register their phone's IMEI in Turkey?
Not for a normal short holiday.
BTK's official consumer guidance states that a phone brought from abroad can be used in Turkey for 120 days without IMEI registration. If the device is not registered within that period, it can be closed to Turkish communication services.
For a one-, two- or three-week holiday, this usually means you do not need to think about IMEI registration at all. The rule becomes relevant to people who stay much longer, repeatedly use the same foreign device in Turkey, or are moving to Turkey rather than visiting briefly.
The 120-day device rule is separate from your SIM package validity. A 28-day tourist SIM does not mean your phone itself becomes blocked after 28 days, and a 120-day IMEI window does not make a 28-day data package last longer.
You can display your device IMEI by dialling *#06#. For official registration information, use the BTK device-registration guidance.
Check your phone before buying any SIM or eSIM
A cheap plan is useless if the device is locked or does not support the format you bought.
- Make sure the phone is carrier-unlocked. A phone locked to your home network may reject a Turkish SIM or travel eSIM.
- Confirm eSIM support. The same phone model can have different eSIM capabilities depending on country or hardware version.
- Update your phone before travel. Install system updates while you still have reliable home Wi-Fi.
- Know your dual-SIM controls. Decide which line is used for mobile data, calls and messages.
- Turn off data roaming on the expensive line. Keeping your home SIM active for banking SMS does not mean it should use roaming data.
- Save QR codes and instructions offline. Some eSIM profiles cannot be re-downloaded easily after deletion.
- Do not delete a working eSIM profile while troubleshooting. Contact the provider first.
How to keep your home number while using Turkey data
Many newer phones let you keep your normal SIM active and use a second SIM or eSIM only for mobile data. This is useful when banks, airlines or messaging services still send verification codes to your home number.
Set the Turkish or travel line as the mobile-data line and disable data roaming on your home line unless your normal plan includes Turkey. Incoming SMS rules depend on your home carrier, so check whether receiving a text abroad costs anything.
WhatsApp does not require you to change your WhatsApp number simply because you install a Turkish SIM. When the app notices a different SIM, you can normally keep using the existing WhatsApp number.

How much mobile data do you need in Turkey?
Your usage pattern matters more than the number of days alone.
| Usage style | Rough data target | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 5–10 GB | Maps, WhatsApp, email, ride/transport apps and occasional browsing |
| Normal holiday use | 10–20 GB | Daily maps, social media, photo uploads, restaurant searches and some video |
| Heavy | 30 GB+ | Frequent video, cloud backups, hotspot/tethering or work calls |
Hotel Wi-Fi can reduce usage, but do not rely on it for navigation between cities. Download Google Maps areas, airline boarding passes, hotel confirmations and important transport details offline before long travel days.
A simple Turkey mobile-data plan
Use this order to avoid arriving with no connection.
- Check your home roaming price. It gives you a backup even if you do not plan to use it.
- Confirm your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible if you want an eSIM.
- Choose local SIM, local eSIM or international eSIM based on whether you need a Turkish number.
- If using an international travel eSIM, install it before departure. Do not depend on accessing a blocked storefront after arrival.
- Save operator/provider support details offline.
- On arrival, test maps and messaging before leaving the airport.
- Turn off unwanted roaming data on your home SIM.
- Keep enough data for transfer days. Intercity coach, airport and hotel changes are when mobile data is most useful.

SIM and eSIM mistakes to avoid
- Arriving in Turkey before installing a foreign travel eSIM.
- Assuming “eSIM blocked” means every eSIM stops working.
- Buying from a random airport seller without asking for the full final price.
- Forgetting that a carrier-locked phone may reject another SIM.
- Leaving home-SIM data roaming on accidentally.
- Deleting an eSIM profile during troubleshooting.
- Confusing the 120-day IMEI rule with the validity of your tourist package.
- Buying far more data than you need while hotel Wi-Fi covers most heavy use.
Turkey SIM card and eSIM questions
Short answers for tourists travelling in 2026.
Is eSIM banned in Turkey in 2026?
No. Turkish operators still offer eSIM. The restriction affects access inside Turkey to the websites or apps of many foreign travel-eSIM providers, not eSIM technology itself.
Do Airalo, Holafly, Saily and other travel eSIMs work in Turkey?
Several major travel-eSIM provider websites and apps have been included in Turkish access-blocking decisions. A profile installed before arrival may still provide roaming service depending on the provider, but you should confirm current Turkey support directly and install everything before travel rather than relying on buying or topping up after arrival.
Can tourists buy a Turkish eSIM?
Yes. Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey currently advertise eSIM options for tourist customers. Eligibility, phone compatibility and identity-verification steps apply.
Do I need my passport to buy a SIM card in Turkey?
For a local tourist line, expect to provide your passport. Official operator tourist pages use foreign-passport details for registration and activation.
Can I buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport?
Yes. Tourist SIMs are sold through operator or dealer locations at major airports. Airport purchase is convenient, but ask for the total line and package price before paying because retail charges can vary.
Do I need to register my phone's IMEI for a two-week Turkey trip?
No. BTK states that phones brought from abroad can be used for 120 days without IMEI registration. A normal short holiday is well inside that period.
Can I keep WhatsApp on my normal number with a Turkish SIM?
Yes. Installing another SIM does not force you to change your WhatsApp number. Keep your existing WhatsApp number when prompted unless you specifically want to change it.
How much data should I buy for a 10-day Turkey trip?
Many travellers are comfortable with around 10–20 GB for maps, messaging, browsing, social media and normal photo uploads. Heavy video, hotspot use or cloud backups can require much more.
Finish the travel essentials before your flight.
Connectivity is only one part of the pre-trip checklist.
