Turkey Itinerary: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale & Ephesus

How to combine four of Turkey's biggest first-trip highlights without wasting days on backtracking — including the best route order, nights per stop and transport choices.

Last reviewed: 28 September 2026 By: Going2Turkey Independent Turkey travel guide
Quick answer

Ten days is a strong length for Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus.

A balanced first trip is 3 nights Istanbul → 3 nights Cappadocia → 1 night Pamukkale → 2 nights Selcuk/Ephesus, finishing near Izmir for an easier onward flight. If you prefer domestic flights over long coaches, you can swap the last two stops and travel Cappadocia → Izmir/Ephesus → Pamukkale.

The important part is not forcing one transport method onto the whole trip. Fly the long Istanbul–Cappadocia leg if time matters, use road or rail for the shorter western Turkey connections, and keep enough nights in Cappadocia for a second balloon morning if weather cancels the first.

This route is best for travellers who want Turkey's strongest mix of city culture, unusual landscapes, ancient ruins and one famous natural site in a single trip.

Route order

Best route order for Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus

Both can work. The better order depends mainly on how you leave Cappadocia and where you want to finish.

My practical choice for a first trip

If you are happy with one long coach or overnight transfer, the cleanest geographic line is Istanbul → Cappadocia → Pamukkale → Ephesus/Selcuk → Izmir. You finish close to a major airport instead of travelling back across western Turkey.

If you strongly prefer flights, compare Kayseri or Nevsehir connections to Izmir on your exact date. When a convenient flight exists, visiting Ephesus before Pamukkale can save energy even though the route order looks less tidy on a map.

Do not choose the route from the map alone. A slightly less direct route can be faster if it matches a good domestic flight. Compare the complete door-to-door journey, including airport transfer time.
How many days?

8, 10 or 12 days for the classic Turkey route

All four places can fit into a shorter trip, but the experience changes quickly as you remove nights.

8–9 days

Fast and active

Use 2–3 nights Istanbul, 2 nights Cappadocia, 1 night Pamukkale and 2 nights around Selcuk/Ephesus. Expect several early starts and little flexibility.

10 days

Best balance

Three nights in Istanbul and Cappadocia, one night at Pamukkale and two nights around Ephesus gives each major stop a clear purpose without adding a fifth region.

11–12 days

More comfortable

Add one extra Istanbul day, one extra Cappadocia day or a slower western Turkey day for Sirince, Izmir or a relaxed arrival/departure buffer.

Classic four-stop plan

Four very different experiences — without adding a fifth region.

Istanbul gives you the city and history, Cappadocia the landscape, Pamukkale the thermal terraces and Hierapolis, and Ephesus the strongest archaeology day of the trip.

10-day plan

Day-by-day Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus itinerary

This version uses the geographically clean route and finishes near Izmir.

Day 1

Arrive in Istanbul

Keep your first day light. Check in, walk your neighbourhood and use the evening for Sultanahmet, Galata, Karakoy or the Bosphorus depending on where you stay.

Day 2

Istanbul Old City

Focus on Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace area. Add the Grand Bazaar only if you still have energy rather than turning the day into a checklist.

Day 3

Bosphorus and neighbourhoods

Use a ferry or cruise to understand Istanbul from the water, then explore Karakoy, Galata, Kadikoy or another neighbourhood beyond the historic peninsula.

Day 4

Fly to Cappadocia

Fly to Nevsehir or Kayseri, take an airport transfer to Goreme or your chosen village, and keep the afternoon for an easy viewpoint, Uchisar or a short valley walk.

Day 5

Balloon morning + north Cappadocia

Book the balloon for this first full morning. After breakfast, explore Goreme Open-Air Museum, Pasabag, Zelve, Avanos or a similar north-Cappadocia route.

Day 6

Underground city + valleys

Use the second full day for Derinkuyu or Kaymakli, a longer valley experience and viewpoints. If your balloon was cancelled on Day 5, this morning becomes your backup.

Day 7

Travel to Pamukkale

Use a long-distance coach, private transfer, or a flight/connection depending on your dates. If you arrive late, sleep near Pamukkale and keep the terraces for the next morning.

Day 8

Pamukkale + Hierapolis, then Selcuk

Visit the travertines and the ancient city of Hierapolis early. Continue to Selcuk in the afternoon or evening so you can reach Ephesus before the biggest heat and crowds the next day.

Day 9

Ephesus full day

Give Ephesus proper time for the Library of Celsus, Curetes Street, the Great Theatre and the Terrace Houses. Add the Basilica of St John, Ephesus Museum or Sirince if your pace allows.

Day 10

Selcuk, Izmir and departure

Use the final morning for anything you missed in Selcuk, then continue toward Izmir Airport or stay an extra night in Izmir if your international connection works better the next day.

Transport

Best transport between Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus

Use the fastest method where distance is large, then switch to road or rail once the places become closer together.

Istanbul → Cappadocia

Fly if your trip is 10 days

A domestic flight protects a large amount of sightseeing time. Compare Nevsehir and Kayseri using the full airport-to-hotel journey, not flight time alone.

Cappadocia → Pamukkale

Coach, transfer or flight connection

This is the awkward long leg. A coach can keep the route moving in one direction, while a flight may be easier if schedules line up through another airport.

Pamukkale → Selcuk

Road or regional rail

Denizli and Selcuk are much closer than the earlier legs. Coach, transfer or regional rail can all work depending on the timetable.

Selcuk → Izmir

Easy final connection

Finishing in Selcuk makes Izmir a practical departure point, reducing the need to return all the way to Istanbul.

Booking rule: lock in the long domestic flight and Cappadocia balloon first. Keep shorter western Turkey transfers more flexible until your exact hotel and sightseeing times are clear.
Where to stay

Best bases for this itinerary

DestinationBest practical baseWhy it works
IstanbulSultanahmet, Sirkeci, Karakoy or GalataGood access to major sights and transport.
CappadociaGoremeWalkable, lots of tours and transfers, easy first visit.
PamukkalePamukkale villageUseful for an early terraces/Hierapolis visit.
EphesusSelcukClose to Ephesus, museum, Basilica of St John and onward Izmir transport.

If you prefer resort atmosphere, Kusadasi can replace Selcuk, but Selcuk is usually more convenient when Ephesus is the main reason for stopping in the area.

Common mistakes

Seven mistakes that make this route harder than it needs to be

1

Adding Antalya to a 10-day version

Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus already make a full route. Add Antalya only when you have more time.

2

Giving Cappadocia only one night

You lose your balloon backup and spend too much of the visit checking in and out.

3

Returning to Istanbul after Ephesus

Check an open-jaw international ticket or an Izmir connection before assuming you must retrace the whole route.

4

Visiting Pamukkale only for the white terraces

Hierapolis is a major part of the visit, so allow enough time for both rather than treating Pamukkale as a photo stop.

5

Rushing Ephesus

Give the ancient city several hours, especially if you want the Terrace Houses and nearby Selcuk sights.

6

Booking the balloon on your last morning

Weather cancellations happen. Earlier booking gives you a chance to move the flight to the next morning.

7

Using exact timetable advice months later

Domestic flight and coach schedules change. Use the route logic here, then verify your exact dates before paying.

FAQ

Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus itinerary questions

Short answers to the decisions travellers usually make before booking this classic route.

How many days do I need for Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus?

Ten days is a good balance. Eight or nine days is possible at a faster pace, while eleven or twelve days gives you more weather and transfer flexibility.

What is the best order for Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus?

For a coach or mixed-transport route, Istanbul → Cappadocia → Pamukkale → Ephesus → Izmir works well. If a convenient Cappadocia–Izmir flight is available, visiting Ephesus before Pamukkale can also make sense.

Should I visit Pamukkale before Ephesus?

Visit Pamukkale first if you want to finish in Selcuk/Izmir and avoid western backtracking. Visit Ephesus first if your best Cappadocia connection lands in Izmir and you are happy to finish near Denizli.

Is 7 days enough for all four places?

It is physically possible but fast. For most independent travellers, seven days is better used for fewer stops; eight to ten days gives the four-stop route more breathing room.

Do I need a rental car for this itinerary?

No. Flights, coaches, regional rail, airport shuttles, taxis and organised tours can connect the entire route. A car is optional rather than necessary.

Where should I stay for Ephesus?

Selcuk is the most practical base when Ephesus is your priority because it is close to the site and also useful for the Ephesus Museum, Basilica of St John and onward Izmir connections.

Can I do Pamukkale as a day trip from Selcuk?

Yes, but an overnight in Pamukkale can make the route calmer and lets you visit the terraces and Hierapolis earlier or later in the day.

Should I add Antalya to this itinerary?

Not on a typical 10-day trip. Add Antalya when you have around 12–14 days or when the Mediterranean coast is a higher priority than a slower Istanbul or Cappadocia stay.
