10 Day Turkey Itinerary: Istanbul, Cappadocia & Ephesus
A realistic day-by-day route for first-time visitors who want Istanbul, three proper days in Cappadocia and enough time to experience Ephesus without turning the whole trip into transfers.
Ten days is enough for Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus if you keep the route simple.
A practical plan is 3 days in Istanbul → 3 days in Cappadocia → 3 days around Selcuk and Ephesus → departure on Day 10. Use domestic flights for the two long cross-country moves when the schedules work for your dates.
This itinerary deliberately does not add every famous stop in Turkey. The goal is to protect full sightseeing days instead of losing half the holiday to airport transfers, long bus rides and hotel changes.
If you are flying internationally in and out of Istanbul, you can still use the same route. Just allow a safe connection back to Istanbul on Day 10, or return the evening before if your international flight is early.

Days 1–3: start with Istanbul properly
Three days gives you time for the historic centre, the Bosphorus and at least one neighbourhood outside Sultanahmet.
Arrive, settle in and keep the first day light
After a long international flight, do not schedule your hardest sightseeing day immediately. Check in, walk around Sultanahmet, see the Blue Mosque area from outside, get your bearings and have an early dinner. If you arrive in the morning and feel fresh, add Basilica Cistern or a relaxed waterfront walk.
Historic Istanbul
Use the full day for the major historic peninsula sights. A practical order is Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Square early, followed by Topkapi Palace or Basilica Cistern, then the Grand Bazaar or Spice Bazaar depending on your energy. Do not try to rush every museum into one day.
Bosphorus + neighbourhood Istanbul
Take a Bosphorus cruise or public ferry experience, then continue through Karakoy, Galata or the Asian side. This is the day that makes Istanbul feel like a living city rather than only a collection of monuments.
Istanbul deserves more than one checklist day.
The historic peninsula is only one layer of the city. Keeping a third day gives you room for the Bosphorus, neighbourhoods, food and a slower evening before you fly to Cappadocia.
Days 4–6: Cappadocia and the first balloon morning
Cappadocia works best when you do not reduce it to one sunrise photo. Three nights gives you a backup morning for balloon weather and two proper sightseeing days.
Fly to Cappadocia and keep sunset free
Fly from Istanbul to either Nevsehir (NAV) or Kayseri (ASR), then continue by prearranged airport shuttle or private transfer to your hotel. After check-in, use the afternoon for Goreme, Uchisar or a nearby viewpoint rather than booking a full-day tour.
Balloon morning + northern Cappadocia
If you want a hot-air-balloon flight, book it for your first full morning. After breakfast, use the day for Goreme Open Air Museum, Pasabag, Zelve, Avanos and viewpoints, or choose a Red Tour-style route if you prefer not to organise transport yourself.
Underground city + valleys
Use the second full day for Derinkuyu or Kaymakli Underground City, then add Ihlara Valley and Selime if you want a long sightseeing circuit. If you prefer less driving, choose a hiking-focused day around Red, Rose or Pigeon Valley instead.

Move west to Selcuk and give Ephesus a full day
Selcuk is a practical base because Ephesus sits just outside town, and the wider area has enough history for more than a rushed half-day.

When a direct Kayseri-to-Izmir flight fits your date, it can save a large part of the day. If it does not, compare a connecting flight through Istanbul with an overnight bus. From Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, continue south toward Selcuk by rail, road transfer or rental car.
Full Ephesus day
Start early, especially in warm weather. Walk the ancient city properly: Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus, Great Theatre and the major public spaces. Add the Terrace Houses if they are open and important to you. Current restoration work can change the walking route, so follow the signed route on the day.
Selcuk + one extra experience
Choose what matches your interests: Ephesus Archaeological Museum, Basilica of St John, Isa Bey Mosque, the Temple of Artemis area, House of the Virgin Mary or a half-day in Sirince. This flexible day is valuable because it stops Ephesus becoming a hurried transfer stop.
Do not treat Ephesus as only the Library of Celsus.
Ephesus is a UNESCO World Heritage property with major remains from the Hellenistic, Roman and early Christian periods. The Library is the famous photograph, but the streets, theatre, houses and wider Selcuk landscape are what give the visit context.

The route is easy enough without a car, but the two long transfers need to be planned before you book small activities.

Which Cappadocia airport should you choose?
Nevsehir (NAV) is closer to the central Cappadocia towns, while Kayseri (ASR) can have more useful flight choices on some dates and is particularly relevant if you want a direct onward flight toward Izmir. Compare the full door-to-door journey, not only the airfare.
Do you need a rental car?
No. Istanbul is easier without one, Cappadocia can be covered with transfers and tours, and Selcuk/Ephesus is straightforward by local transport or taxi. A short rental can make sense only if you want independent countryside stops.
Best areas to stay on the Istanbul–Cappadocia–Ephesus route
The right neighbourhood is more useful than constantly chasing the cheapest room on the other side of town.

Best when your priority is walking to the major Old City sights. Choose Karakoy or Galata instead if evening atmosphere and access to both sides of the Golden Horn matter more.

1. Adding Pamukkale, Antalya and Bodrum to the same 10 days
You can physically move through more places, but the trip becomes a transport challenge. For a first visit, this route is stronger when Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus each get proper time.
2. Booking the Cappadocia balloon on Day 6 only
If the flight is cancelled for weather or official safety reasons, you have no backup morning. Put it on Day 5 whenever possible.
3. Assuming all Cappadocia-to-Izmir flights operate every day
Direct services and times can change by season. Check your exact date before you make a non-refundable hotel plan around one flight.
4. Trying to see Ephesus in one hour
The site deserves several hours, and the Terrace Houses or a guided visit can add more time. Start early and do not schedule a long intercity transfer immediately afterwards.
5. Ignoring the final international connection
If you must fly home from Istanbul, build a safe buffer between your Izmir–Istanbul flight and the international departure. Separate tickets need even more caution.
6. Booking a tour for every day
Organised tours are useful where they solve transport or context problems. Keep some independent time in Istanbul, Cappadocia and Selcuk so the itinerary does not feel like ten consecutive pickup times.

Should I fly or take the bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia?

Which Cappadocia airport is better, Nevsehir or Kayseri?

No. Domestic flights, airport transfers, intercity buses, local rail and taxis are enough. A car is optional for independent regional sightseeing, not a requirement.
Can I do the itinerary in reverse?
Yes. Starting near Izmir and finishing in Istanbul can work very well if your international flights are better that way. Keep the same number of nights and reverse the long-distance transport.
Where should I fly home from?
Izmir is the most convenient airport at the western end of this route. If your international ticket requires Istanbul, book a separate domestic connection with a generous buffer or return to Istanbul the night before an early long-haul flight.
