Iztuzu is not just Dalyan's beach — it is a protected nesting landscape that visitors share with sea turtles.
Iztuzu Beach, often called Turtle Beach, forms the long sandy barrier between the Dalyan delta and the Mediterranean near Ortaca in Muğla. Official regional tourism information describes a roughly 5 km arc of golden sand where the river-and-lagoon landscape meets the sea.
The beach is famous because Caretta caretta loggerhead sea turtles use the sand for nesting during the warmer months. That means a normal beach day comes with real conservation rules. From May through September, official Muğla guidance says visitors must leave the beach between 20:00 and 08:00 so nesting and hatching can happen with less disturbance.
For most travellers, Iztuzu works best as a half-day or relaxed afternoon from Dalyan. You can arrive by river boat for the full delta experience or by road/minibus if you want more control over timing. If you also want Kaunos, do the archaeological site first while the day is cooler, then use Iztuzu as the slower second half of the day.
The beach remains enjoyable because some parts of it are deliberately not treated like an ordinary resort beach.
Official Muğla tourism information says Iztuzu is used as a nesting area by loggerhead turtles from May to September. During that period, public use is closed between 20:00 and 08:00. GoTürkiye gives the same night-time protection rule and explains that visitors leave the beach to the turtles after 20:00.
GoTürkiye also says umbrellas and sunbeds are not permitted in the nesting zone. In normal visitor sections you can still swim and use daytime beach services, but marked nests and protected sand must be left alone.
Do not dig deep holes, move nest markers, shine strong lights at night, chase hatchlings, handle turtles or treat wildlife encounters as staged entertainment. If you happen to see a turtle in the water, enjoy the sight from a respectful distance.
GoTürkiye further notes that speedboats are not allowed within 1 km of Iztuzu because of the protected nesting environment. That is one reason the Dalyan river approach feels very different from a fast coastal speedboat trip.
Road and river both work — they simply give you different versions of the Dalyan experience.
Public boat from Dalyan
GoTürkiye says the public boat from Dalyan town centre normally takes around 30–40 minutes. The value is not just transport: you travel through the reed-lined river-and-delta system that makes Dalyan distinctive.
Minibus
GoTürkiye estimates roughly 20 minutes by minibus. This can suit travellers who want an easy land journey without driving. Check the same-day return schedule locally, especially late in the season.
Private car
GoTürkiye gives an approximate 10–15 minute driving time, while Muğla tourism confirms the asphalt road reaches the beach via the delta and Sülüngür Lake side. Actual time depends on where you start and traffic.
Possible, but protection rules apply
Private-boat access exists, but this is a protected delta and turtle beach. Follow local navigation rules, remember the speedboat restriction near Iztuzu and never assume a private vessel can approach however it likes.
A long natural beach with services at the ends, rather than a wall of development behind the sand.
Official Muğla tourism information describes Iztuzu as a rare beach set between the freshwater delta/lake system and the Mediterranean. The long sandbar helps separate the Dalyan wetlands from the open sea and gives the area its unusual geography.
Swimming is a normal daytime activity during permitted visitor hours and suitable sea conditions. The beach can feel more open and natural than a sheltered lagoon, so judge wind, waves and your own swimming ability on the day rather than assuming conditions will always be flat.
Official regional information says there are services at both ends of the beach, including food and drink, showers, sunbeds and umbrellas. Those visitor services do not cancel the nesting rules: staff must work around protected nests and restricted zones.
There is no reason to turn a visit into a race from one end to the other. Pick the side that suits your transport, swim, walk only where appropriate, and leave enough time for the return journey before the seasonal evening closure.
Iztuzu is famous for turtles, but the goal is not to manufacture a close encounter.
A sighting is never guaranteed
Caretta caretta use this coast, but they are wild animals. You may see a turtle in the water and you may see none at all. The beach is still worth visiting for the delta landscape and protected natural setting.
Let the turtle choose the space
Do not swim after turtles, corner them with boats, touch them or try to position yourself for a close photograph. A responsible encounter is one where the animal can continue its normal behaviour.
Never “help” without authorised guidance
Do not pick up hatchlings or move them toward the sea unless authorised conservation staff instruct you to do so. Artificial light, noise and human handling can disrupt natural orientation.
Follow markers and staff instructions
Nest zones may be marked or managed differently as the season progresses. Treat signs, barriers and conservation instructions as part of the beach visit, not an inconvenience to work around.
Put archaeology first, then slow the day down at the river and beach.
Kaunos Ancient City
Visit the archaeological site before the strongest heat. Allow enough time for the theatre, Roman bath, basilica and harbour landscape instead of only photographing the tombs from across the river.
Dalyan river + lunch
Return toward town, eat beside the river and enjoy the classic view of the Kaunos rock tombs. This is a natural break between archaeology and the beach.
Iztuzu Beach
Use the later part of the day for swimming and the delta landscape. During May–September, leave enough margin to be off the protected beach before 20:00.
Choose a tour for logistics — not because Iztuzu itself requires one.
Independent from Dalyan: usually the simplest choice if you are already staying in town. Use the public boat for the delta experience or road transport for timing flexibility.
Organised day tour: useful if you are staying in Marmaris, Fethiye or another resort and want transfers bundled with a Dalyan river cruise, mud baths, lunch and beach time. Read the itinerary carefully because beach time and Kaunos access vary.
