Dalyan is a small river town in Muğla's Ortaca district, between the Fethiye and Marmaris sides of the southwest coast. The Dalyan channel links Köyceğiz Lake with the Mediterranean through reeds, wetlands and the protected delta around Iztuzu Beach.
The first thing most visitors notice is the line of monumental rock-cut tombs above the opposite bank. They belong to the wider ancient landscape of Kaunos, whose archaeological site sits across the river. The second signature experience is the boat journey through the reed-lined channel toward Iztuzu Beach.
Dalyan is not a conventional resort where the beach sits directly in front of the town. That is part of its appeal. You stay beside the river, then travel by boat or road to the beach, ruins, lake or thermal areas.
For a first visit, two nights is a good minimum. It gives you one full day for the river and Iztuzu or Kaunos without turning every hour into transport. Add a third night if you want a slower boat day, mud baths, Köyceğiz Lake or extra time at the beach.
The river journey is the experience, not just transport to the beach.
Start beside the river
Central Dalyan sits directly on the channel. Cafes, restaurants, jetties and small boats line the waterfront, with the Kaunos rock tombs visible across the water. This makes the town easy to enjoy on foot before or after a boat trip.
Boat through the wetlands
Official Muğla tourism information describes excursion boats travelling from Dalyan through the maze-like channel to Iztuzu. The narrow, shallow waterways are part of a sensitive protected environment, so use established local boat services rather than treating the delta like an unrestricted marina.
See Kaunos from the water
The fourth-century-BC rock tombs are one of the strongest views on the route. You can see them from town and from the river, but that view is not the same as visiting the full Kaunos archaeological site on foot.
Observe, do not chase
The delta is known for turtles, birds and other wetland wildlife. Sightings are never guaranteed. Choose operators that keep sensible distance and avoid treating wild animals as props for feeding or close-contact photographs.
Kaunos deserves more than a photograph of the tombs.
Kaunos was an important ancient port city, although silting gradually pushed the shoreline away and changed the harbour landscape. Official Turkish Museums information highlights its theatre, Roman bath, basilica, temples, city walls and acropolis, as well as the rock tombs that can be seen from Dalyan.
GoTürkiye describes Kaunos as a short boat ride from Dalyan. A common independent approach is to cross the river toward the Çandır side and continue on foot to the archaeological site. Organised river excursions can also include views or access, but read the itinerary carefully: seeing the tombs from the boat is not automatically a full Kaunos visit.
Current-hours caution: official Turkish Museums pages reviewed in September 2026 display conflicting Kaunos timetable information in different sections. For that reason this Dalyan overview does not pretend there is one perfectly verified closing time. Recheck the live museum listing on the day you visit, especially if you plan a late-afternoon entry.

Iztuzu is both a swimming beach and a major sea-turtle nesting area.
Official Muğla tourism information says Iztuzu Beach can be reached from Dalyan by road or by boat through the channel. The two approaches feel different: road access gives you more control over arrival and departure, while the boat makes the delta part of the day.
The beach separates the freshwater delta from the Mediterranean and is internationally known as a nesting area for Caretta caretta loggerhead turtles. This is not a zoo or a guaranteed turtle-viewing attraction. The priority is the nesting habitat.
Turtle-protection rule updated September 2026: Muğla's official tourism authority states that during the May–September nesting season, Iztuzu is closed to visitor use from 20:00 until 08:00. Follow local signs and conservation staff because beach-management rules can change.
Official information also notes visitor facilities at both ends of the beach, including food/drink services, showers, sunbeds and umbrellas. Equipment placement is controlled to reduce the risk of damaging buried nests.
Mud baths and thermal stops are optional extras, not the reason you must visit Dalyan.
Mud-bath stop
Many Dalyan and Marmaris day tours combine the river with a mud-bath stop. Treat it as a fun social experience rather than expecting a medical treatment. Facilities and included services vary by operator.
Sultaniye Hot Springs
Muğla tourism information identifies Sultaniye, on the Köyceğiz Lake side, as one of the best-known local thermal areas and notes boat access from Köyceğiz, Dalyan and Ekincik.
Prioritise river + ruins + beach
If you have only one full day, the strongest Dalyan combination is usually the river, Kaunos context and Iztuzu. Add mud baths only when they genuinely interest you rather than because every package tour includes them.
Read the exact itinerary
Some tours spend significant time at thermal or mud-bath facilities; others focus more on the river and beach. Compare stop lengths, lunch, transfers and whether Kaunos is a real site visit or only a view from the boat.
Dalaman Airport is the practical air gateway, but Dalyan also fits naturally between Fethiye and Marmaris.
Dalaman
Dalyan lies in Ortaca district, close to the Dalaman side of Muğla. Pre-booked transfers, taxis and regional transport are common ways to connect. Check the live route and pickup point because airport journey times vary with traffic and stops.
Continue west
Dalyan is a logical next stop after Fethiye or Gocek if you are moving along the southwest coast. Staying overnight gives you much more flexibility than joining a very long out-and-back day tour.
Continue east
Dalyan is also a popular day excursion from Marmaris, but travellers with two free nights can use Dalyan as a calmer base and avoid repeating the transfer both ways.
Stay central
A central Dalyan stay works well without a car because the waterfront and boat jetties are walkable. For Iztuzu road access, outlying accommodation or wider Ortaca/Köyceğiz exploration, local transport or a transfer can make the day easier.

Waterfront + Kaunos
Start before the strongest heat. See the tombs from the river, cross toward Kaunos and give the archaeological site enough time to walk beyond the first viewpoint.
Slow Dalyan town
Return for lunch, walk the riverfront and keep the later afternoon flexible. This is a good time for a shorter boat ride or simply enjoying the town without another transfer.
Delta boat + Iztuzu
Travel through the reed channel to Iztuzu, swim and respect the protected nesting zones. Return before the evening turtle-protection closure rather than trying to stretch the beach day into the night.
With a third day, add Köyceğiz Lake, Sultaniye thermal springs or a longer regional drive. If your priority is beach time rather than archaeology, reverse the order and make Iztuzu your first full day.
Dalyan is easy to explore independently, but tours can simplify river logistics.
Independent: best if you are staying in Dalyan. You can arrange the river boat, Kaunos crossing and beach timing locally, and you do not need a guide simply to walk the town.
Organised: useful if you are based in Marmaris, Sarigerme, Dalaman or another resort and want transfers, a river boat, lunch and several stops bundled into one day. Check whether the tour actually enters Kaunos or only views the rock tombs from the river.
