Ihlara is the Cappadocia valley to choose when you want river scenery and a real walk.
Ihlara Valley stretches for about 14 km through southern Cappadocia in Aksaray Province. The Melendiz River runs along the canyon floor, creating a greener and cooler-feeling landscape than the exposed fairy-chimney valleys around Goreme.
The official Turkish Museums description says canyon walls can reach about 120 metres high and that the valley runs from Ihlara through Belisirma and Yaprakhisar toward Selime. GoTürkiye describes the full walking corridor as relatively easy, but the complete 14 km route is still a substantial day on foot.
For most first-time visitors, the best balance is a shorter valley section with churches and a Belisirma stop, or a Green Tour that handles the long-distance transport from central Cappadocia.
Ihlara combines nature, walking and early Christian heritage in one canyon.
It feels very different from the dry, exposed viewpoints around central Cappadocia.
Melendiz River
The river runs along the valley floor beside trees, gardens and shaded sections, giving Ihlara its unusually green atmosphere.
Rock-cut churches
Churches and living spaces were carved into the soft volcanic rock. The official site says 14 churches are currently open to visitors.
A real trail, not a viewpoint stop
You experience Ihlara by moving through it. Even the popular shorter section needs proper shoes and enough time to enjoy the river and side paths.
A greener side of Cappadocia
If your itinerary already includes Love Valley, Pasabag or Red Valley, Ihlara adds a completely different canyon-and-river landscape.
Short section or full valley?
The right route depends on your time, fitness and transport—not on trying to say you walked all 14 kilometres.
Main entrance + nearby churches
Use the main stair entrance, descend into the canyon, see a few nearby churches and walk along the river before returning. Best when Ihlara is only one stop in a packed day.
Ihlara entrance → Belisirma
GoTürkiye describes this popular first section as about 4 km, beginning with the 382-step descent. Belisirma makes a natural rest or lunch point.
Continue toward Selime
The complete valley corridor is about 14 km. Only choose the full route if you have enough daylight, water, footwear and a clear transport plan at the far end.
Green Tour partial hike
Most Green Tours use a shorter Ihlara section rather than walking the whole valley. This is practical if you also want Derinkuyu and Selime in one day.
Do not walk past every church just to finish the trail faster.
The churches are what turn Ihlara from a scenic canyon into an important cultural site.
Agacalti Church
One of the first major churches many visitors encounter after entering the valley, with surviving religious scenes painted inside the rock-cut space.
Yilanli Church
Also called Serpent Church, it is one of the best-known Ihlara churches and a useful stop on the popular valley section.
Kokar Church
Another important frescoed church that helps show how many religious spaces are hidden in the canyon walls rather than concentrated in one museum complex.
Saint George / Kirkdamalti
Churches around the Belisirma section show a stronger Byzantine painting tradition than some of the earlier churches nearer Ihlara.
The live Turkish Museums description says the wider area contains 105 churches historically and lists 14 as open to visitors. Access to individual spaces can still change because of conservation or local conditions.

This is why Ihlara fits the Green Tour better than the Red Tour: the sights are spread far south of Goreme and work naturally as one transport-heavy loop.
Derinkuyu Underground City
Start underground while energy is high, then continue south toward the canyon rather than returning to central Cappadocia.
Ihlara Valley + Belisirma
Walk a manageable river section, stop at rock-cut churches and use Belisirma for lunch or a rest beside the Melendiz River.
Selime Monastery
Finish with the large rock-cut complex near the far end of the valley before the long drive back toward Goreme, Uchisar or Urgup.
Ihlara is easy to understand on foot; getting there and back is the harder part.
If you have a car and enjoy walking, independent travel gives you the most control over route length. If you are staying in Goreme without a car, a Green Tour solves the long-distance transport and connects Ihlara with Derinkuyu and Selime.
Book directly if you are driving; use the Green Tour if transport is the problem.
