Cappadocia Travel Guide
Fairy chimneys, underground cities, sunrise balloons, hiking valleys and classic day tours—organised so you can choose the experiences that fit your time instead of trying to do everything.
Cappadocia works best when you separate sunrise, central sights and long-distance day trips.
For a first visit, think in three layers: one sunrise experience, one central sightseeing day around the fairy-chimney landscapes, and one longer day for an underground city or the Green Tour route.
Göreme Open Air Museum, Pasabag, Love Valley, Uçhisar Castle and the Red and Rose Valleys can be combined in different ways without spending the whole day in a vehicle. Derinkuyu Underground City sits farther from the central cluster and makes more sense on a dedicated south-Cappadocia day or as part of the Green Tour.
The hot air balloon is the signature experience, but it is not the only reason to come. Hiking, ATV riding and horse riding all use the same unusual landscape in very different ways. If you have limited time, choose one or two activities that add something new rather than booking several experiences that cover similar valleys.
Six Cappadocia attractions to build your first trip around
These places show different sides of Cappadocia: rock-cut churches, underground history, panoramic viewpoints and valleys you can explore on foot.

Goreme Open Air Museum
Rock-cut churches, chapels, refectories and monastic spaces with important Byzantine frescoes inside the UNESCO-listed Cappadocia landscape.

Derinkuyu Underground City
Multi-level underground settlement with narrow passages, chambers, wells, stone doors and ventilation shafts.

Love Valley
Cappadocia valley known for distinctive capped fairy chimneys, panoramic viewpoints and walking routes near Goreme and Uchisar.

Pasabag
Monks Valley near Zelve with Cappadocia’s distinctive multi-headed fairy chimneys, rock-cut cells and the St. Simeon chapel tradition.

Red and Rose Valleys
Connected hiking valleys with pastel volcanic ridges, rock-cut spaces and one of Cappadocia’s strongest sunset landscapes.

Uchisar Castle
High rock formation and panoramic viewpoint above Uchisar with carved rooms, stairs and wide views across central Cappadocia.
A practical way to organise 3 days in Cappadocia
Keep sunrise separate from the rest of your day. Balloon mornings start early, and the best plan afterwards is usually a slower sightseeing schedule rather than another dawn-to-dusk rush.
Balloon + central Cappadocia
Start with the balloon if you are flying. Later, focus on Göreme Open Air Museum, Pasabag and one viewpoint or short valley walk. This gives you the classic landscape without cramming every stop into the same day.
See the balloon guide →Green Tour + underground city
Use one full day for the wider south-Cappadocia route. Derinkuyu and the Ihlara-area landscapes are spread farther apart, which is why an organised Green Tour can be practical if you are not driving yourself.
See the Green Tour guide →Valleys + one activity
Spend time around Love Valley or the Red and Rose Valleys, add Uçhisar for a higher viewpoint, then choose one activity such as sunset ATV or horse riding rather than trying to book both.
Explore the valleys →You can explore much of Cappadocia independently—but the distances change the decision.
Central attractions and valleys are easy to combine on your own when you have transport and enjoy flexible sightseeing. Guided day tours become more useful for far-apart stops, underground cities and travellers who prefer not to organise transfers between scattered sites.

Which Cappadocia experience fits you?
Hot Air Balloon
The signature sunrise experience if the budget works for you and weather allows the flight to operate.
Green Tour
A useful full-day option when you want an underground city and farther-away south-Cappadocia landscapes in one route.
Red Tour
Better for travellers who want a guided circuit through several well-known central and north-Cappadocia stops.
ATV or Horse Riding
Choose ATV for more energy and speed, or horse riding for a quieter way to move through the valleys.
Planning Cappadocia
Short answers for the decisions most first-time visitors need to make.
How many days do I need in Cappadocia?
Two to three full days is a useful starting point. Two days can cover the main central sights and one longer route; three days gives you more flexibility for balloon weather, hiking and an additional activity.
Should I book the balloon on my first morning?
If ballooning is important to you, an earlier morning is usually safer for planning because flights can be cancelled when conditions are unsuitable. That leaves another morning available if your schedule allows a rebooking.
Do I need both the Green Tour and Red Tour?
No. They cover different areas, but many travellers prefer one organised day tour and use another day for independent attractions, hiking or an activity. Choose based on the places you most want to see.
Can I visit Cappadocia attractions independently?
Yes. Central valleys and several major attractions can be explored independently, especially if you have your own transport. A guided tour is more convenient when you want to cover distant stops without organising the route yourself.
ATV or horse riding—which should I choose?
ATV suits travellers looking for a faster, more energetic ride. Horse riding is generally a quieter scenic experience. Both often use valley routes, so you probably do not need both on a short trip.
