Topkapi is a palace complex, not one building.
Give it at least three hours if you want more than a quick walk through the courtyards. First-time visitors usually get the most value from the Imperial Council area, palace collections, Sacred Relics, the Harem and the Bosphorus-facing terraces.
Topkapi Palace was built for Sultan Mehmed II after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. Construction developed from 1460 to 1478, and later sultans continued adding buildings and decoration.
For roughly four centuries it was one of the main centres of Ottoman government, education, ceremony and royal life. The imperial household later shifted to Dolmabahce Palace in the nineteenth century.
The working heart of the Ottoman court for centuries
Topkapi makes more sense when you see it as a city-within-a-city: ceremonial gates, working courtyards, schools, kitchens, private apartments, treasury spaces and gardens were organised by access and status.
Built for Mehmed II
The palace developed after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople and became the new imperial centre at Sarayburnu.
Expanded by later sultans
New pavilions, Harem rooms, ceremonial spaces and service buildings were added as palace life evolved.
Court shifts to Dolmabahce
As imperial protocol changed, the dynasty moved its main residence and administrative focus to newer Bosphorus palaces.
Opened as a museum
After the foundation of the Republic of Türkiye, Topkapi became a museum and remains one of Istanbul’s major historic attractions.

You do not need to study every room. These stops give a strong first visit without turning the palace into a checklist.
Imperial Council & courtyards
Follow the sequence from the outer areas toward increasingly private spaces. The layout itself explains how access to the sultan was controlled.
Harem
The Harem is one of the most requested parts of the palace. Look beyond the myths and focus on its family apartments, hierarchy, tiles and controlled circulation.
Imperial Treasury
Topkapi’s treasury collections are among the palace highlights. Displays or individual rooms can change during conservation, so follow the current museum route.
Sacred Relics
The former Privy Chamber houses the Sacred Relics collection, adding a religious and ceremonial layer to the palace story.
Imperial kitchens
The kitchen complex helps show the scale of daily palace life and contains important collections connected with Ottoman court dining and ceramics.
Fourth Courtyard
Pavilions and terraces open toward the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and Sea of Marmara — a calmer finish after the denser museum rooms.
Topkapi is closed on Tuesdays. Build the Harem into your ticket plan.
The official National Palaces page currently lists Tuesday as the weekly closed day and the ticket office as open from 09:00 to 17:00. A Topkapi Palace combined ticket is offered for the palace, Hagia Irene and the Harem.
Ticket prices and room access can change. Museum Card rules are also different for some sections: the official guidance says the card is not valid for the Topkapi Harem or Hagia Irene.

Enter through the Imperial Gate, orient yourself, then continue toward the Imperial Council, kitchens and the main inner-palace gateways.

Use your Harem access when queues make sense, then continue to the Audience Chamber area, treasury collections and Sacred Relics.
Fourth Courtyard & views
Finish with the pavilions and terraces, where the palace opens toward the Bosphorus and the historic peninsula coastline.
