Quick answer

Trabzon works best as a three-day base for the eastern Black Sea.

Trabzon is not only a gateway to mountain scenery. It is a historic Black Sea city with its own waterfront, old neighbourhoods, local food and viewpoints, while two of the region's biggest reasons to travel - Sumela Monastery and Uzungol - sit within day-trip range.

For a first visit, give one day to central Trabzon, one day to the Macka / Sumela route and one day to Uzungol. That is more useful than trying to combine both major countryside trips into one rushed day.

Official Trabzon tourism material consistently highlights Sumela and Uzungol among the province's main attractions. GoTurkiye also builds separate regional routes around the monastery, Uzungol, highlands, caves and coastal districts, which shows why the wider province needs more than a city-centre afternoon.

Choose your base

Central Trabzon is the easiest base for most first-time visitors.

Best first-time base

Meydan / city centre

Best for restaurants, local transport, evening walks and simple airport access. You can reach central historic areas without changing hotels or depending on a car every day.

Old-city feel

Ortahisar

Choose Ortahisar if you want the historic core and old city walls closer to your door. It is a good fit for travellers who prefer local streets over a modern waterfront base.

Views

Boztepe

Boztepe works when elevated city views matter, but check the exact walking gradient and transport from your accommodation before booking.

Nature overnight

Uzungol

Stay at Uzungol only if you want early morning or evening lake atmosphere. For a short Trabzon trip, keeping one city hotel and making a day trip is usually simpler.

Major sights

The places that explain Trabzon best.

Essential day trip

Sumela Monastery

The monastery clings to a steep cliff above Altindere Valley in Macka. Its setting is as important as the architecture, so allow time for the valley journey, access walk and the monastery itself.

Nature icon

Uzungol

The lake and mountain valley around Caykara are among the eastern Black Sea's best-known landscapes. Treat the road journey, lakeside walk and surrounding viewpoints as a full day.

City panorama

Boztepe

Go for a broad view over Trabzon and the Black Sea. It works especially well late in the day when you want a slower stop after city sightseeing.

Historic city

Ortahisar + city walls

Walk the older urban core around Ortahisar to understand Trabzon as a historic Black Sea city, not only a base for mountain trips.

Medieval heritage

Trabzon Ayasofya

The 13th-century monument is one of the city's major surviving historic buildings. Visitor arrangements can change around worship and local use, so approach it respectfully and check access on the day.

Local history

Ataturk Pavilion

The mansion in the Soguksu area is one of Trabzon's best-known civic-history stops and pairs naturally with a city day rather than a separate full itinerary.

Current official visitor information

Sumela Monastery: live 2026 hours.

The live Turkish Museums listing checked on 27 September 2026 shows Sumela Monastery open from 08:00 to 19:00, with the ticket office closing at 18:30. It is currently listed as open every day.

The official museum description places the monastery at Altindere, on a steep cliff about 300 metres above the valley. Even when the site is open, weather, conservation work or local access management can affect parts of the visit, so check the official page again before a long drive.

This guide does not list an admission price here because prices and ticket arrangements can change. Use the official Turkish Museums page for the current ticket information on your travel date.

Uzungol day

Uzungol is about 99 km from Trabzon - plan it as a real day trip.

The official Trabzon tourism authority places Uzungol around 99 km from Trabzon and about 19 km from Caykara, at roughly 1,150 metres above sea level. The lake formed when a landslide blocked the Haldizen stream valley, creating the landscape seen today.

The distance alone does not tell the whole story. Mountain roads, weather, traffic and viewpoint stops can turn the journey into a large part of the day. Go early and avoid building a fixed evening plan immediately after returning.

Walking beside the lake is easy to understand, but the wider area is about more than the shoreline. The official tourism material also points to surrounding highlands, nature walks, cycling and mountain scenery.

What to eat

Black Sea food should be part of the itinerary.

Classic

Kuymak / muhlama

A rich cornmeal-and-cheese dish is one of the region's best-known breakfasts or shared starters. It is filling, so pair it with a lighter sightseeing morning.

Black Sea staple

Hamsi

Anchovy dishes are closely associated with Trabzon and the Black Sea. Availability and preparation vary by season, so ask what is fresh rather than ordering only by reputation.

Local bread

Trabzon pide

Pide is an easy lunch during a city day. Compare busy local bakeries or pide restaurants instead of choosing only by a tourist-facing menu.

Route stop

Hamsikoy sutlac

Rice pudding from Hamsikoy is a classic stop on the Macka / Sumela route and fits naturally after the monastery rather than requiring a separate journey.

Getting there and around

Trabzon Airport is close to the city; the countryside needs more planning.

Airport

About 7 km from central Trabzon

Turkey's State Airports Authority lists Trabzon Airport about 7 km from the city centre. It currently lists Havas passenger service, municipal bus, dolmus, taxi, rental car and private car as transport options.

City centre

Walk + local transport

Meydan and much of central Trabzon are manageable without a car. Use local transport or taxis for steeper or more distant urban stops such as Boztepe and Soguksu.

Sumela

Car or organised day trip

A car gives flexibility around Macka and Hamsikoy. A tour is useful when you prefer not to manage mountain-road logistics or want the monastery's history explained.

Uzungol

Car gives the most freedom

Public and shared transport exists in the region, but a car or organised day trip makes it easier to manage viewpoints and the long return. Confirm current local services before relying on them.

Simple itinerary

A practical three-day Trabzon plan.

Day 1 morning

Meydan + Ortahisar

Start in central Trabzon, walk the old-city area and city walls, and keep the first morning easy after arrival.

Day 1 afternoon

Ayasofya + Ataturk Pavilion

Use local transport or taxi for the larger city loop, then finish at Boztepe if the weather is clear.

Day 2

Sumela + Macka / Hamsikoy

Make Sumela the focus. Add Hamsikoy or one good valley stop rather than trying to collect every monastery, cave and plateau in the same day.

Day 3

Uzungol

Leave early, allow a full day for the road and lake area, and return to Trabzon without scheduling a tight evening transfer.

Extra day

Highlands or coast

If you have a fourth day, choose one direction: highlands, Cal Cave / Akcaabat side, or another eastern Black Sea route. Do not try to cover the whole province at once.

Weather backup

Keep one flexible block

Cloud, rain and mountain conditions can change the value of scenic trips. Keep at least one part of the itinerary flexible enough to swap city and mountain days.

Independent or guided?

Trabzon city is easy independently; tours are most useful for the countryside.

You do not need a guide for Meydan, Ortahisar, Boztepe or a simple city-food day. The main value of a tour is transport and explanation on the longer countryside routes.

For Sumela, a guided trip can add historical context and remove the driving problem. For Uzungol, compare route stops carefully because some tours spend more time shopping or making photo stops than at the lake itself.

FAQ

Trabzon planning questions.

Is Trabzon worth visiting?

Yes. Trabzon is one of the strongest bases for the eastern Black Sea because it combines a real coastal city with Sumela Monastery, Uzungol, mountain scenery and distinctive regional food. Three days gives a much better visit than treating it only as a quick airport stop.

How many days do I need in Trabzon?

Three full days is a strong first visit: one day for central Trabzon and Boztepe, one day for Sumela Monastery and the Macka route, and one day for Uzungol. Add another night if you want a slower highland day or more time around the Black Sea coast.

What are the current Sumela Monastery opening hours?

The live Turkish Museums listing reviewed in September 2026 shows Sumela Monastery open 08:00-19:00, with the ticket office closing at 18:30, and currently lists it as open every day. Recheck the official page before travel because seasonal or conservation arrangements can change.

How far is Uzungol from Trabzon?

The official Trabzon tourism authority places Uzungol about 99 km from Trabzon and about 19 km from Caykara. The mountain-road journey can take longer than the distance suggests, especially in busy periods, so plan Uzungol as a proper day rather than a short city stop.

Do I need a car in Trabzon?

No for the city centre. Meydan, Ortahisar and several central sights are manageable on foot with local transport or taxis. A car becomes much more useful for Uzungol, highlands and flexible countryside stops, although organised day tours are an easy alternative for Sumela and Uzungol.

How do I get from Trabzon Airport to the city centre?

Turkey's State Airports Authority places Trabzon Airport about 7 km from the city centre and lists Havas passenger service, municipal bus, dolmus, taxi, rental car and private car as current transport options. Check live operator times for your arrival rather than relying on an old fixed timetable.
