Karain is not just a scenic cave. It is one of the key prehistoric sites in Turkey.

Karain Cave lies northwest of Antalya near Yagca in Dosemealti. Official Turkish sources say traces of human occupation here reach back roughly 500,000 years, with Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods represented.

The cave sits above the travertine plain, so visiting involves an uphill approach with steps before you reach the chambers. It is a compact archaeological visit, but the setting and age make it very different from Antalya's Roman sites.

Allow around 1.5 to 2.5 hours for the cave, the climb, the small museum area and time to look at the surrounding landscape without rushing.

What you see

Cave chambers, archaeological layers and evidence of very early life.

Inside

Natural cave chambers

Karain is one of Turkey's largest natural caves. Stalactites, stalagmites and narrow passages sit beside the archaeological story.

Archaeology

Deep cultural layers

Official sources describe an archaeological deposit about 11 metres thick, built up through repeated occupation over a very long period.

Classical period

Greek inscriptions and niches

The cave was also used later in antiquity. Greek inscriptions and votive niches outside show that it continued to have ritual importance.

Finds

Tools, bones and animal remains

Excavations have produced stone and bone tools plus remains of animals such as rhinoceros, elephant and hippopotamus that no longer live in Anatolia.

Why Karain matters

Human occupation can be followed across several prehistoric periods.

About 500,000 years ago

Early occupation

Official Antalya sources say traces of hunter-gatherer life at Karain reach back roughly half a million years.

Paleolithic

Lower, Middle and Upper phases

Karain is unusual because all three major Paleolithic phases can be traced here rather than only one short period.

Later prehistory

Neolithic to Bronze Age

The cave continued to be used through later prehistoric periods, creating the unusually thick cultural sequence seen by archaeologists.

Classical era

Ritual use

Greek inscriptions and rock-cut niches indicate that the cave later had a religious or votive role.

Visitor information · updated September 2026

Current official hours are 08:00–19:30.

The official Turkish Museums page currently lists 08:00 opening, 19:30 closing and 19:00 ticket-office closing. It says Karain Cave is open every day.

The same official page states that MuseumPass/Muzekart is valid for Turkish citizens. This guide does not list a ticket price because admission can change.

Check the live official page before travel, especially outside the main season, because older brochures show different seasonal schedules.

Wear shoes with gripThe approach has steps and uneven surfaces, and cave floors can feel slick.
Expect a climbThe cave sits high above the plain, so this is not a flat roadside stop.
Bring waterThe uphill approach can feel hot even though the cave itself is cooler.
Allow your eyes to adjustMove carefully inside the darker chambers and avoid rushing between levels.
The climb

The approach is part of the visit.

1 · Arrival

Start below the cave

Karain sits above the surrounding travertine plain. From the visitor area you climb toward the entrance rather than walking directly into a level cave.

2 · Cave

Take your time inside

Move through the chambers slowly, paying attention to both natural formations and archaeological areas.

3 · Return

Descend carefully

Leave enough time and energy for the steps back down, especially in hot weather.

Route ideas

Karain pairs naturally with northwest Antalya sights.

Best pairing

Termessos

Combine prehistoric Karain with a mountain ancient city if you have transport and are comfortable with a walking-heavy day.

Easier archaeology

Perge

Choose Perge instead if you want broad Roman ruins with much less climbing.

Central Antalya

Kaleici

Use Kaleici for an easier historic walk before or after a day outside the city centre.
