Quick answer

What is the best way from Alacati to Ephesus?

If you do not have a car, travel from Alacati to Izmir first, then continue to Selcuk. From Selcuk, Ephesus is only about 3 km away and can be reached by local minibus, taxi or on foot.

Current route planning shows the practical coach journey through Izmir Otogar. A through connection can be around two and a half to four hours depending on the exact coach combination and waiting time. Current booking engines also maintain an Alacati-Selcuk route page, but departures and operators can change, so check your exact date instead of assuming a direct service will always be available.

If you prefer rail for the second leg, travel from Alacati toward Izmir and continue from Izmir Basmane to Selcuk. Current train information shows several direct Basmane-Selcuk services each day, usually taking around 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.

Driving is the fastest simple option. Current route estimates put Alacati to Selcuk at roughly 142 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes before traffic, parking and stops. Ephesus is then a few minutes beyond Selcuk by road.

Most practical public transport

Alacati to Ephesus by bus via Izmir

This is the easiest route to understand and the one I would plan first if you are not driving.

Step 1: Alacati to Izmir

Start from the Alacati/Cesme coach corridor and travel toward Izmir Otogar. Current route planners show regular Alacati-Izmir services. The exact stop used in Alacati depends on the operator, so check whether your ticket lists Alacati station, the main roadside stop or another pickup point.

Do not confuse Izmir Otogar with Izmir city centre. The intercity bus terminal is in the Bornova side of the city. If your second ticket is also a coach to Selcuk, staying at the Otogar is easier than travelling into Konak or Alsancak and then coming back out.

Step 2: Izmir Otogar to Selcuk

From Izmir Otogar, take a coach or regional bus toward Selcuk. This is the gateway town for Ephesus. Current route planning shows the whole Alacati-Selcuk journey through Izmir can be done in around two and a half hours on a well-matched connection, but other combinations are slower.

Leave a useful connection buffer. Separate bus tickets are not protected like one airline booking. In summer, traffic on the Cesme-Izmir road can add time, and the bus terminal can be busy. A 45-60 minute connection is more comfortable than trying to save 15 minutes.

Step 3: Selcuk to Ephesus

Once you reach Selcuk, the ancient city is close. Current local visitor information puts Ephesus about 3 km from central Selcuk, around a 10-minute drive or roughly 35 minutes on foot.

Local minibuses run from the Selcuk transport area toward the Ephesus Lower Gate during the day. Taxis are also simple for this short final leg. If you are carrying large luggage, do not drag it through the archaeological site. Leave it at your hotel or arrange storage in Selcuk first.

Rail option

Can you take a train from Alacati to Ephesus?

Not directly. The train becomes useful only after you reach Izmir.

Alacati is not on the railway. To use the train, first travel toward Izmir, then continue from Izmir Basmane Station to Selcuk.

Current 2026 rail information shows several direct Basmane-Selcuk trains per day. Current journey planners put the trip at about 1 hour 21 minutes to 1 hour 29 minutes depending on the service. That makes rail comfortable, but only if your Alacati arrival point in Izmir makes the Basmane transfer sensible.

If your Alacati coach already arrives at Izmir Otogar and a Selcuk coach is leaving soon, changing to rail can add unnecessary city travel. If you are spending time in central Izmir first, however, Basmane can be an excellent second-leg choice.

Budget public-transport alternative

Official ESHOT information still lists 760 Cesme-Urla, which serves Alacati stops, and 684 Urla-Fahrettin Altay Express. This can be useful for travellers using Izmir's municipal transport network rather than an intercity coach.

It is cheaper and more local, but it involves more changes and is not the simplest choice with luggage. For most visitors going straight from Alacati to Ephesus, the intercity coach connection through Izmir is easier to manage.

Arrival

Selcuk to Ephesus: the final short connection

Selcuk is the practical transport base for Ephesus, not just a name on your bus ticket.

Ephesus is close enough to Selcuk that you do not need another long transfer. Local minibuses travel toward the Lower Gate through the day, while taxis are useful if you are short on time, travelling as a small group or carrying bags.

One detail matters: many visitors enter Ephesus at the Lower Gate and finish higher up the site. Before you start walking, decide how you will return to Selcuk or reach your onward transport. If your minibus or taxi plan is tied to the Lower Gate, do not discover at the end of a long visit that your luggage or pickup is somewhere else.

Should you stay in Selcuk?

If Ephesus is a major reason for your Turkey trip, yes. Staying one night in Selcuk gives you a much better visit than trying to leave Alacati, tour Ephesus, collect luggage and continue to another distant destination on the same day.

Selcuk also puts you near the Ephesus Museum, Basilica of St John, Temple of Artemis and Sirince. It is one of those places where an overnight stay can make the whole route calmer without adding a major detour.

Driving

Driving from Alacati to Ephesus

Driving is the fastest option and works especially well in a larger western Turkey road trip.

Current route estimates put Alacati to Selcuk at roughly 142 km and around 1 hour 30 minutes in normal conditions. The Ephesus archaeological site is only a few kilometres farther.

Allow more time in summer. Traffic around the Cesme Peninsula and Izmir can be heavier, and your real door-to-door time includes hotel checkout, fuel, parking and walking from the Ephesus car park.

Should you rent a car just for this transfer?

Usually not. If you are only moving from Alacati to Selcuk, public transport is cheaper and easy enough. A car becomes more useful when you also want to visit places such as Sirince, Pamukkale, Bodrum or smaller Aegean stops where direct public transport is less convenient.

Check the one-way fee

If you collect the car around Alacati or Izmir and return it in Bodrum, Dalaman or Antalya, compare the complete one-way rental price. A low daily rate can become expensive after drop-off fees, fuel and parking are added.

Day planning

Can you visit Ephesus on the same day you leave Alacati?

Yes, but an early start makes a big difference.

If you leave Alacati early and your connections line up, you can arrive in Selcuk before lunch and still have several hours for Ephesus. This works best when Selcuk is your overnight stop.

If you also plan to continue to Pamukkale, Bodrum, Marmaris or Fethiye that evening, the day becomes much harder. Ephesus is not a quick photo stop. The main site takes time, summer heat slows you down, and transport connections are easier when you are not watching the clock.

Best same-day plan

Leave Alacati early, reach Selcuk, store luggage, visit Ephesus, return to Selcuk, eat dinner and sleep locally. Continue south the next morning.

Best plan if you hate changing hotels

Drive or book a private transfer, visit Ephesus, then continue to your next overnight base. This costs more but removes the need to carry bags between buses and local minibuses.

Route order

Where should Ephesus sit in your western Turkey itinerary?

For most routes, Ephesus should come after Izmir/Alacati and before Pamukkale or the south Aegean coast.

A clean route is Canakkale/Troy → Izmir → Alacati → Ephesus/Selcuk → Pamukkale → Bodrum → Marmaris → Fethiye → Antalya. You do not need every stop, but the order avoids unnecessary backtracking.

If you are beach-focused, you can go Alacati → Ephesus → Bodrum and skip Pamukkale. If history is the priority, continue from Ephesus to Pamukkale before turning southwest toward Bodrum.

If you are returning to Izmir Airport after Ephesus, Selcuk also has useful rail links toward the airport corridor. That can make Selcuk a better final base than going back to Alacati just to sleep.

For your next leg, use the Ephesus to Pamukkale guide, Ephesus to Bodrum guide, or Ephesus to Fethiye guide.

Who should choose what?

Best option by traveller type

Solo travellers

Coach via Izmir is usually the best balance of cost and simplicity. Use the train only if the Basmane connection fits naturally.

Couples

Coach is good value. A rental car becomes more attractive if Ephesus is followed by Pamukkale or a multi-stop Aegean road trip.

Families

Compare four public-transport fares plus local taxis against a private transfer or rental car. Door-to-door travel can be worth the extra cost with children and several bags.

Travellers with large luggage

Use two coach legs through Izmir Otogar rather than mixing local buses, metro and train. Fewer transfers usually matter more than saving a small amount.

History-focused travellers

Stay in Selcuk for at least one night. Ephesus is much better when you do not have to race back to a beach town the same afternoon.

Common mistakes

Eight mistakes to avoid

1. Assuming every Alacati-Selcuk search result is a direct bus

Current route planners commonly use a change in Izmir. Check the ticket details before paying.

2. Going into Izmir city centre when both buses use Izmir Otogar

If both legs are coaches, changing at the Otogar is simpler than adding unnecessary city transport.

3. Making the Izmir connection too tight

Traffic from the Cesme Peninsula can change your arrival time. Leave a useful buffer between separate tickets.

4. Booking Basmane train tickets without planning the Izmir transfer

Basmane is not at Izmir Otogar. The train can be excellent, but only when the city connection fits your schedule.

5. Thinking Selcuk and Ephesus are the same stop

Selcuk is the transport town. Ephesus is about 3 km away and needs one final local connection.

6. Carrying full luggage through Ephesus

Leave bags in Selcuk first. The site is large, exposed and much easier without a suitcase.

7. Rushing Ephesus to catch another long-distance bus

Give the site proper time. If your onward connection is tight, stay in Selcuk and travel the next morning.

8. Renting a car without checking one-way fees

Road travel can be excellent, but compare the full cost if the car will be returned in another city.
