Plan the western Izmir coast around Cesme Castle, Alacati stone streets, Ilica Beach, windsurfing, local food and a realistic three-day route without turning every bay into a separate trip.
Cesme and Alacati are strong enough for a proper Aegean stay, not just a day trip from Izmir.
Cesme is the larger coastal centre, built around its castle, marina, harbour and beaches. Alacati is smaller and more atmospheric, known for stone houses, cobbled lanes, restaurants, boutiques and the steady wind that made the area one of Turkey's best-known windsurfing bases.
For a first visit, three nights is a useful target. That gives you one day for Cesme and Ilica, one day for Alacati and windsurfing or beach time, and one flexible day for the peninsula's bays, a boat trip or the ancient settlement of Erythrai at Ildiri.
GoTurkiye recommends a car when you want to explore several beaches. The historic centres themselves are walkable, but the coast is spread out and beach-hopping is much easier with your own transport.
Cesme, Alacati or Ilica?
They are close together, but they suit different travel styles.
Stay in Cesme
Best if you want the castle, marina, waterfront restaurants, practical transport and a more conventional seaside-town base. It also works well when you plan to drive around the peninsula.
Stay in Alacati
Best for boutique hotels, stone lanes, cafes, dinner and nightlife. The old centre is inland rather than directly on the beach, so expect short drives or local transport for swimming and surf areas.
Stay in Ilica
Best if easy beach access matters more than nightlife. Ilica is known for its long sandy beach and thermal-water tradition and sits between Cesme and Alacati.
One base is enough
For most short trips, do not change hotels between Cesme and Alacati. Pick one base and visit the other in the morning or evening. Moving luggage usually adds more friction than value.
Keep the trip focused on a few strong places.
Focus on the places that add something different to the trip: Alacati streets, Cesme Castle, a good beach day and one boat or activity day.
Cesme Castle & Museum
The fortress dominates the harbour area and houses Cesme Museum. It is the main history stop in town and gives a useful break from a beach-only itinerary.
Old stone streets + windmills
Walk the historic centre around Kemalpasa and Hacimemis, then continue toward the old windmills. GoTurkiye highlights the restored stone houses, cobbled streets and 19th-century windmills as Alacati signatures.
Ilica Beach
Ilica is the easiest famous beach to combine with both Cesme and Alacati. It is known for pale sand, shallow water and the area's thermal-water tradition.
Ildiri & Erythrai
Ildiri is a quieter fishing settlement built around the remains of ancient Erythrai, one of the Ionian cities. Treat it as a half-day history-and-coast outing rather than another separate destination page.
Do not try to collect every named bay in one day.
Official Cesme tourism routes group Ilica, Ayayorgi, Altinkum, Delikli and other bays together because they are different parts of one peninsula. Choose by the day you want rather than by a long checklist.
Ilica is convenient and family-friendly for many travellers. Altinkum is known for clear water and a more exposed coast. Ayayorgi is associated with beach clubs and a livelier summer scene. Delikli is more natural and simple, with fewer comforts.
Conditions, parking, beach-club access and local charges change by season. Check the exact beach or club on the day instead of assuming old online prices are still valid.
Alacati's wind is not a side note — it is one of the destination's main reasons to visit.
GoTurkiye and Visit Izmir both identify Alacati as one of Turkey's major windsurfing areas. The bay south of town is shallow and sheltered in parts, while steady wind creates good conditions for both learning and more advanced sailing.
If you are a beginner, use a recognised surf school and book the right lesson level rather than renting equipment with no local briefing. Wind direction and strength change, so let the school decide the safest teaching area for that day.
If you do not surf, the area is still worth visiting for the marina, coast and atmosphere. Do not build your whole holiday around a fixed wind forecast weeks in advance.
Cesme Castle & Museum: current 2026 hours and ticket.
The official Turkish Museums listing checked on 27 September 2026 shows 08:30–21:00, with the ticket office closing at 20:30, and says the museum is open every day.
The official e-ticket store checked the same day lists the foreign-visitor ticket at EUR 6. Museum hours and prices can change, especially across seasons, so recheck the official Turkish Museums listing before a late visit.
The official museum description says the castle carries both Genoese and Ottoman architectural traces and was enlarged and repaired under Sultan Bayezid II in 1508–1509.

Cesme kumru
The area's signature sandwich is one of the easiest local foods to try. Look for a busy specialist rather than choosing only by the most tourist-facing location.
Herbs, meze & olive oil
Local greens, olive-oil dishes and meze fit naturally with the peninsula. In spring, Alacati is especially associated with regional herbs and its herb-festival tradition.
Seafood
Cesme and Alacati both have plenty of seafood restaurants. Ask what is fresh, check prices before ordering by weight, and choose the setting that suits you rather than chasing one universal “best” restaurant.
Mastic flavours
Mastic gum appears in ice cream, cookies and desserts around the peninsula. It is an easy local flavour to try without turning your trip into a food checklist.
Summer is lively; spring and early autumn are easier.
GoTurkiye notes that July and August are very busy in Alacati, while spring and autumn are calmer and can still feel like an extended summer. That makes May, June, September and early October attractive for travellers who want warm weather without peak-season crowds.
High summer is still the right choice if nightlife, beach clubs and maximum resort energy are part of the trip. Just book accommodation earlier and expect traffic and parking to take longer around the most popular beaches.

Best for beach hopping

Easy Aegean extension
If you are already staying in Izmir, Cesme and Alacati make a natural coastal extension. Give them at least one night if evening atmosphere is part of the reason you are going.

Choose your coast day
Pick one direction: Ayayorgi and beach-club atmosphere, Altinkum and clear water, or Ildiri/Erythrai for a quieter history-and-coast outing. Do not try to combine every bay.

Cesme, Alacati and Ilica are straightforward to explore without a guide. A rental car gives the most flexibility for beaches and Ildiri. Organised experiences make more sense for boat trips, private transfers and activities where equipment is included.
For a larger Aegean route, combine this destination with Izmir. Keep Pergamon and Ephesus & Selcuk as separate full-day history trips rather than trying to add them to a Cesme beach day.
