How to visit the white Pamukkale travertines

Pamukkale’s white terraces formed from calcium-rich thermal water flowing over the hillside. They are part of the protected Hierapolis–Pamukkale UNESCO World Heritage Site, so this is not a place where every white pool is open for swimming or walking. Follow the signed visitor route, staff directions and current rules to protect the fragile deposits.

In permitted walkable sections you may need to remove your shoes. Some pools have less visible water than photographs suggest because the flow is managed for conservation. Avoid promising a specific water depth or a completely filled set of terraces at any time of year. Bring water, sun protection and a small bag for footwear, and take care on wet surfaces.

Pamukkale travertines or Hierapolis: should you visit both?

For a first visit, combine the white terraces with the ancient city above them if time and mobility allow. The travertines are the distinctive natural sight; the ruined city provides the historical context of the thermal springs. The ancient theatre, streets and archaeological remains make the visit more substantial than a quick photograph at the pools.

See our Hierapolis ancient city guide for the ruins, and the Pamukkale travel guide for how long to stay and how to organise a stop on a Turkey itinerary.

Pamukkale visitor questions

Can you walk everywhere on the white terraces?

No. Use only the clearly designated visitor sections; other parts are protected or closed to preserve the formations.

No. Water distribution changes for preservation and maintenance. The appearance on your day may differ from promotional photographs.
