Canakkale & Gallipoli Travel Guide
Use Canakkale as a practical base for the Dardanelles, Gallipoli battlefields and Troy: ferries, memorial routes, where to stay, current 2026 visitor checks and a realistic three-day plan.
Canakkale works best as the base that connects Troy, the Dardanelles and Gallipoli.
Canakkale sits on the Asian side of the Dardanelles, directly opposite the Gallipoli Peninsula. For most first-time visitors, the city is the easiest place to sleep because the waterfront, restaurants, bus connections and ferry terminals are together.
The region is not one single attraction. Troy is southwest of the city, while the Gallipoli Historical Area is across the strait on the European side and covers a large landscape of cemeteries, memorials, trenches, ridges, museums and castles. Official GoTurkiye planning material treats the Gallipoli route as a substantial visit rather than a quick stop.
For a balanced first trip, allow three nights: one easy city/Dardanelles day, one Gallipoli day and one Troy day. Two nights can work if you arrive early and keep the schedule tight.
Canakkale city, Eceabat or Kilitbahir?
Canakkale city
Best for restaurants, waterfront walks, bus connections and a simple ferry crossing to Gallipoli. It is also the most practical base for a separate Troy day.
Eceabat
Useful if Gallipoli is the main reason for your trip. You stay on the European side and reduce repeated crossings when using a battlefield tour or car.
Kilitbahir
A smaller base beside Kilitbahir Castle and the narrowest part of the Dardanelles. Good for atmosphere, but with fewer city conveniences than Canakkale.
Add Kilitbahir or the southern peninsula
If you have more than one Gallipoli day, add Kilitbahir Castle, Seddulbahir and the southern memorial route instead of rushing between distant sectors.
The city itself is compact and easy to explore on foot.
Kordon
Walk the Dardanelles promenade, watch the ferries and use the waterfront as the easiest orientation point for the city.
Trojan Horse
The wooden horse used in the 2004 film Troy is displayed on the waterfront. It is separate from the archaeological site and museum near Tevfikiye.
Aynali Carsi
GoTurkiye lists Aynali Bazaar as one of the city symbols. Combine it with the nearby lanes rather than treating it as a long standalone attraction.
Naval history
The city and strait have several military-history displays and fortifications. Opening arrangements can change, so choose the museums that fit your main route rather than trying to see every collection.
Plan Gallipoli as a route through a landscape, not one monument.
The official Gallipoli Historical Site administration manages a 33,500-hectare historical area. Its visitor list includes Turkish memorials, Commonwealth cemeteries, museums, castles, bastions, trenches and landscape points spread across the peninsula.
For many international visitors the core northern route includes Anzac Cove, Lone Pine, The Nek and Chunuk Bair. Turkish remembrance sites include the 57th Infantry Regiment Martyrs' Cemetery and many other memorials across the peninsula. Farther south, the Canakkale Martyrs' Memorial, Seddulbahir area and other Helles-sector sites form a different circuit.
GoTurkiye publishes a Gallipoli route that takes two days when covered in depth. A one-day first visit is still practical, but choose one coherent circuit instead of trying to tick off every memorial.

Ferry timetables change, and official Kilitbahir visitor pages currently conflict.
Ferries: the live GESTAS timetable checked on 27 September 2026 shows regular crossings on both Canakkale–Eceabat and Canakkale–Kilitbahir. The same official timetable already flags service changes from 5 October 2026. For that reason, This guide does not list a departure table here: check the live GESTAS schedule on the day you travel.
Kilitbahir Castle: two official Turkish Museums listings currently disagree. One live listing shows 09:00–19:00, last ticket 18:15, Monday closed and an adult ticket of TRY 250. Another official listing shows seasonal hours, including 09:00–17:00 after 15 September, and an adult ticket of TRY 200. Because the official sources conflict, this guide does not present one price or closing time as certain.
Outdoor memorial areas do not have one universal ticket or single opening time, but museums, castles, interpretation centres, roads and event zones can have their own access rules. Around 25 April, expect special ANZAC commemoration arrangements and check official access information well in advance.
The strait is easy to cross; the battlefield itself is spread out.
Canakkale ↔ Eceabat
A practical crossing for central Gallipoli access. Current GESTAS services run throughout the day, but exact departures change seasonally.
Canakkale ↔ Kilitbahir
Useful for Kilitbahir Castle and the southern side of many Gallipoli routes. It also gives a strong sense of the narrow Dardanelles crossing.
Car or guided tour
The memorials are too spread out for a simple town-style walking day. A car gives flexibility; a guided tour adds historical context and avoids navigation between scattered sites.
Separate day south-west
Troy Ancient City is around 30 km west of Canakkale and deserves its own half-day or full-day plan with the Troy Museum.
A practical 3-day Canakkale & Gallipoli plan.
Canakkale + Dardanelles
Walk the Kordon, see the waterfront Trojan Horse, explore the old centre and take a short ferry crossing if you arrive early enough. Keep this day light after travel.
Gallipoli Peninsula
Choose one coherent battlefield route. For many first-time international visitors that means the Anzac sector plus Chunuk Bair and selected Turkish memorials; history-focused travellers may add the southern Helles sector with more time.
Troy + Troy Museum
Use the dedicated Troy guide for current hours, museum planning and site time. Return to Canakkale for the evening or continue south toward the Aegean.
Canakkale is easy independently; Gallipoli gains more from a guide.
The city, ferries and Troy are straightforward to organise yourself if you have a car or are comfortable checking local transport. Gallipoli is different: the landscape is large, the chronology is complicated and many places make more sense when connected to the wider campaign.
A guided Gallipoli day is useful for travellers who want context, while independent drivers should build a short list before leaving rather than trying to stop at every sign and cemetery.
Use the Gallipoli Battlefield Tour guide to compare the typical ANZAC-sector route, Canakkale and Istanbul starting points, and realistic timing.
Choose the Canakkale, Gallipoli or Troy experience that fits your itinerary
Compare local battlefield and archaeology days with long-distance options from Istanbul. Starting in Canakkale gives you more time on site; Istanbul departures save a hotel change but involve much longer travel.

Gallipoli Battlefield Tour
Plan a Gallipoli battlefield tour from Canakkale: ANZAC Cove, Lone Pine, 57th Regiment Memorial, Chunuk Bair, ferry timing, guide value and current booking options.

Troy Guided Tour
Plan a Troy guided tour from Canakkale: Troy Museum, UNESCO ruins, current 2026 hours, six-hour tour structure, independent comparison and booking tips.

Gallipoli Day Trip from Istanbul
Plan a Gallipoli day trip from Istanbul: very long road day, ANZAC-sector battlefield route, lunch, guide value, memorial etiquette and whether an overnight stay is better.

Troy Day Trip from Istanbul
Plan a Troy day trip from Istanbul: long-distance bus and ferry travel, archaeological site visit, lunch, guide value and whether staying in Canakkale gives a better experience.

Troy & Gallipoli Full-Day Tour from Canakkale
Compare a combined Troy and Gallipoli full-day tour from Canakkale: around ten hours, ferry crossings, two major history areas and the trade-off between efficiency and depth.

Gallipoli & Troy 2-Day Tour from Istanbul
Plan a two-day Gallipoli and Troy trip from Istanbul: battlefield touring, an overnight stay near the Dardanelles, Troy archaeology, ferry crossings and booking checks.
Canakkale & Gallipoli planning questions.
Is Canakkale worth staying in?
Yes. Canakkale is the easiest base for combining the Dardanelles waterfront, ferries to Gallipoli and a separate Troy day. The city centre is compact, has plenty of food and transport options, and lets you avoid changing hotels between the two major history areas.
How many days do I need for Canakkale and Gallipoli?
Three nights is a strong first visit: one lighter Canakkale day, one Gallipoli day and one Troy day. Two nights can work if you arrive early and keep the route focused. GoTurkiye's own Gallipoli route uses two days when the peninsula is explored in greater depth.
Can I visit Gallipoli without a tour?
Yes, especially with a car. However, the historical area is large and the sites are spread out, so a guided tour is useful if you want the campaign chronology explained and do not want to plan the road route yourself. Independent visitors should choose a short, coherent list of stops.
How do I cross the Dardanelles from Canakkale?
GESTAS operates ferry crossings from Canakkale to both Eceabat and Kilitbahir. The live timetable reviewed in September 2026 already shows service changes from 5 October 2026, so check the official timetable for your exact travel date instead of relying on an old fixed schedule.
What should I see on the Gallipoli Peninsula?
For a first visit, choose a coherent circuit. The northern Anzac sector commonly includes Anzac Cove, Lone Pine, The Nek and Chunuk Bair, with nearby Turkish memorials such as the 57th Regiment site. The southern peninsula has the Canakkale Martyrs' Memorial, Seddulbahir and other Helles-sector sites.
Can I combine Troy and Gallipoli in one day?
It is physically possible with a private vehicle or tightly organised tour, but it makes for a rushed day because the two areas are on opposite sides of the Dardanelles and both deserve time. For most travellers, separate Troy and Gallipoli days give a much better visit.
