The best Istanbul-to-Antalya itinerary depends on what you want to see between the two cities.
If you only want the two cities, fly directly and split about 7 days between Istanbul and Antalya. If you have around 10 days, a very strong point-to-point route is Istanbul → Selcuk/Ephesus → Pamukkale → Antalya. If Cappadocia is your priority, use Istanbul → Cappadocia → Antalya instead.
The key is not to treat Istanbul and Antalya as two points that must be connected by one long road journey. Turkey is large, and different routes suit different interests. The western route is stronger for archaeology and overland flow. The Cappadocia route is stronger for landscapes, cave hotels and balloon country. A direct flight is strongest when beach time matters more than extra stops.

Option 1: Fly directly from Istanbul to Antalya
This is the simplest route if Antalya is the main second destination. Current Pegasus information lists the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen to Antalya flight at about 1 hour 15 minutes. Allow much more than the flight time for airport travel, check-in and baggage, but it is still dramatically faster than travelling overland.
A practical seven-day split is three nights in Istanbul and three nights in Antalya, with one travel day between them. This works especially well for travellers who have already visited Cappadocia or who want more beach and Mediterranean time.
Option 2: Travel via Cappadocia
This is the most famous three-stop version. Fly Istanbul to Nevsehir or Kayseri, stay around three nights in Cappadocia, then continue south to Antalya. On selected dates, Kayseri can have useful nonstop Antalya options, so compare both Cappadocia airports before booking the second flight.

Option 3: Travel via Ephesus and Pamukkale
For travellers who prefer ancient sites and a logical west-to-south route, this is one of the strongest choices. Fly from Istanbul to Izmir, transfer to Selcuk, visit Ephesus, continue to Pamukkale, then move by coach to Antalya. You avoid returning to Istanbul and each stop moves you closer to the Mediterranean.
Option 4: Make it a road trip
If you have 10 to 14 days and enjoy driving, use the one-way self-drive route through Canakkale/Troy, Ephesus, Pamukkale and Fethiye. Do not keep the rental car during your central Istanbul stay. Collect it when you are ready to leave the city.

Days 1–3: start the Istanbul-to-Antalya route in Istanbul
Do not rush the city just because Antalya is your finish.
Use your first full day around Sultanahmet for Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and one major palace or museum. On the next day, take a Bosphorus ferry or cruise and add Karakoy, Galata, Besiktas or Kadikoy. This gives you both the historic city and everyday waterfront Istanbul.
Stay somewhere with straightforward airport access on your final Istanbul night. If your Izmir flight is early, the easiest hotel is not always the most atmospheric one.
Fly to Izmir and base yourself in Selcuk for Ephesus
Selcuk is the practical stop between Istanbul and Pamukkale.
On Day 4, fly to Izmir and transfer south to Selcuk. Keep the afternoon light: walk around the town, visit the Ephesus Museum or Basilica of St John if time allows, and prepare for an early archaeological-site start.
On Day 5, visit Ephesus before the hottest part of the day when possible. Add the Terrace Houses if they interest you, then choose one or two nearby stops rather than trying to visit everything around Selcuk.
Use Pamukkale as the bridge between the Aegean and Antalya
An overnight stop keeps the route calmer than squeezing Pamukkale into a rushed day trip.
Travel from Selcuk toward Denizli/Pamukkale on Day 6. Depending on the service and timing, travellers can use regional rail, coach or a transfer. Once there, keep the rest of the day flexible rather than racing straight into every sight.
Visit the travertines and Hierapolis either later on Day 6 or early on Day 7. Then continue south to Antalya by intercity coach. Current Antalya–Denizli corridor services make this a practical overland connection, but exact departure times change, so check your date before fixing a non-refundable hotel arrival.
Finish with three nights in Antalya
After city sightseeing and archaeological sites, Antalya gives the trip a slower final rhythm.
Spend your first evening around Kaleici and the old harbour. On the next day, combine Kaleici with Lower Duden Waterfall or another easy city sight. Use your final full day for Perge and Aspendos if archaeology is still your priority, or choose a Mediterranean boat or beach day if you want a softer finish.
If you are staying farther from central Antalya, such as Lara, Kemer or another resort zone, account for the extra local transfer time. “Antalya” can mean the city itself or a much wider coastal region.
Flight, bus, train or car from Istanbul to Antalya?
The best transport depends on whether you are travelling straight through or sightseeing along the way.
Direct flight
Pegasus currently lists the Sabiha Gokcen–Antalya flight at about 1 hour 15 minutes. This is the practical choice when you do not want intermediate stops.
Direct coach
Current Istanbul–Antalya coach listings are roughly 11–12 hours for many services. Overnight buses can save a hotel night, but sleep quality varies.
YHT + bus via Konya
There is no direct train all the way to Antalya. TCDD currently publishes combined Istanbul–Konya high-speed-train plus Konya–Antalya bus connections.
One-way rental car
Use a car only if the road journey itself is part of the holiday. A direct Istanbul–Antalya drive is long and offers less value than a properly planned west-coast route.
Should you go from Istanbul to Antalya via Cappadocia?
Yes when Cappadocia is one of your top Turkey priorities.
For a first trip, Istanbul → Cappadocia → Antalya is a very strong 9–10 day route. It gives you three completely different experiences without adding too many stops. Fly from Istanbul to Nevsehir or Kayseri, spend about three nights in Cappadocia, then continue to Antalya.
Do not assume the closest airport will always give the easiest onward flight. Nevsehir is often more convenient for central Cappadocia, while Kayseri may offer stronger Antalya connections on selected dates. Compare both before locking the hotel and airport transfer.

8 mistakes to avoid between Istanbul and Antalya
- Trying to include both Cappadocia and the full western route in a short trip. Pick one middle route unless you have more time.
- Driving directly from Istanbul just because you can. If there are no planned stops, flying saves a large part of a holiday day.
- Treating Antalya as one small place. The city, Lara, Kemer, Side and other resort areas can involve meaningful transfer time.
- Using only the nearest Cappadocia airport. Compare NAV and ASR if Antalya is your next stop.
- Doing Ephesus and Pamukkale in one rushed day. An overnight near Pamukkale makes the route much easier.
- Booking the last bus or flight of the day after a tight connection. Leave buffer for delays and airport transfers.
- Keeping a rental car in central Istanbul. Collect it only when you are leaving the city if you choose the road-trip route.
- Adding too many one-night stops. The strongest Istanbul-to-Antalya itineraries use the middle stops selectively.
